When I lived in Alalbama, between 1976 and 1981, I used to see the KKK gatherings in a field between Garden City and Cullman. It would be at night, and there would be people standing on the side of the road, trying to get others to pull in. I don't know how many would be in the field, put there would be a hugh cross, and they would be circled around it, all dressed in their white robes and hoods. At a certain point in their ceremony, they would light the cross. It would go up in flames, and light the sky, and you could see it from a distance. If you were close enough, you could hear their voices, but you couldn't make out what they were saying. Whatever it was, it was hateful. It was a disgusting sight, that I will never forget it.

donyia "I bet most christians don't know that the KKK is Bible based and you can ONLY be a member IF you are a christian." The KKK might believe they are Bible based but anyone that has read the Bible understands that they are not. "realise that THAT is what Islam means to 95% of the Muslims in the world, and that Islam and Muslims are NOT what that 5% think" The vocal and violent 5% get to define what Islam is, in part because you don't hear the outrage from the 95% majority. Just as Christians and others have very loudly condemned the KKK to the point where they are for the most part a none issue in American society, the 95% of the Muslims that do not support the radical 5% should be doing the same, constantly and very vocally. Unfortunately, with rare exceptions like Donyia, you don't hear that sort of condemnation coming from moderate Muslims. Also, even if it is only 5% of the total Muslim population that holds the radical views being discussed, that amounts to tens of millions of Muslims. My guess is the number of KKK types among the Christian community is miniscule by comparison and meaningless as far as violent actions in recent history. As some already know my racial/ethnic backgound is an African-American father and Irish-English-Dutch-German mother. I grew up in Harlem and from birth I was taught to judge people as individuals, so I'm not swayed by the focus on Islamic extremism to view all Muslims as terrorist radicals. Unfortunately I am constantly surprised by the level of racism that still exist in the world and in the U.S. in the 21st century. I was sitting with my sixteen year old grandson (totally African-American physical characteristics) watching a news report about the upcoming election. I asked him "who would you vote for?" He said "Obama" I asked him "why would you vote for Obama?" His answer "because he is Black." We then had a long discussion regarding political principles, policies, values, etc. and the need to look beyond the superficial (skin color) and make judgements based on facts, logic and sound reasoning. The type of reasoning my grandson expressed is still far too prevalent in our society and it surprises me that this is from someone who has lived in a multicultural background all his life, with closes cousins, aunts, uncles and friends that run the gamit from vanilla white to dark chocolate. P.S. I don't know how many of you saw the exchange by Whoopi on the View about taking ownership of the word "nigger" but her rant expressed some of the most ridiculous backward thinking in my memory.

Back in 1982, I attended a regional Baha'i meeting Near Moscow, Idaho. The local good ol' boys burned a cross in the front of the place we were meeting. KKK? No hoods, but they may have been rushed to act up, or perhaps they were 'under the rose', or just fello-travellers. So, it's not 'just the south' by any means. Scott

No, the south is not the only place they are active, but this is where it all started. It's one of the reasons the south has the worst reputation as being racist. But the fact is, the rest of the country is just as bad, it just doesn't get publicized as much, mainly because of our past and slavery.
