Quick summary--- When Sarah Palin was RUNNING for Governor of Alaska, she publicly supported this bridge as part of her campaign promises to the Alaskan people, working to obtain the $223 million dollars "for the people of Alaska" (even though the bridge would only support a few dozen residents and those visitors who fly into this airport.) When she became Governor, she promptly cancelled the project. Now she's pointing to herself as being a politician who is an OPPONENT of the "bridge to nowhere" idea that Byrd made famous She isn't coming out and admitting that she actually SUPPORTED this bridge for quite some time. That part about having supported it is not getting mentioned on the GOP platform somehow... And, in spite of her so-called opposition to "bridges to nowhere" , her Administration in Alaska is PROCEEDING with building the approach road to the bridge, even though they've KEPT the money and told Congress they aren't going to build the bridge??? (Note - Congress came under fire publicly for pork-earmarking the funds for the bridge. There is no evidence that she was the one who FIRST proposed getting rid of the project, merely that she agreed with Congress's decision afterwards when taxpayers all across the country complained to Congress) This is just the kind of confused spending of taxpayer funded PORK that Trent Lott, the Bushes, and the rest of the GOP do. (note --- the Dems do the SAME thing -- I'm not forgiving them, I will clearly state. They do this pork-politics thing just as much. This bit of news is interesting because it shows just what kinds of decisions our potential VP makes --- Palin is going to have even MORE influence now to send YOUR $$$ to Alaska and other pork projects. Before Mill posts it, I'm sure that other Dems have done this too.) Palin "bridge to nowhere" line angers many Alaskans ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - It garnered big applause in her first speech as Republican John McCain's vice presidential pick, but Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's assertion that she rejected Congressional funds for the so-called "bridge to nowhere" has upset many Alaskans. During her first speech after being named as McCain's surprise pick as a running mate, Palin said she had told Congress "'thanks but no thanks' on that bridge to nowhere." In the city Ketchikan, the planned site of the so-called "Bridge to Nowhere," political leaders of both parties said the claim was false and a betrayal of their community, because she had supported the bridge and the earmark for it secured by Alaska's Congressional delegation during her run for governor. The bridge, a span from the city to Gravina Island, home to only a few dozen people, secured a $223 million earmark in 2005. The pricey designation raised a furor and critics, including McCain, used the bridge as an example of wasteful federal spending on politicians' pet projects. When she was running for governor in 2006, Palin said she was insulted by the term "bridge to nowhere," according to Ketchikan Mayor Bob Weinstein, a Democrat, and Mike Elerding, a Republican who was Palin's campaign coordinator in the southeast Alaska city. "People are learning that she pandered to us by saying, I'm for this' ... and then when she found it was politically advantageous for her nationally, abruptly she starts using the very term that she said was insulting," Weinstein said. Palin's spokeswoman in Alaska was not immediately available to comment. National fury over the bridge caused Congress to remove the earmark designation. Last year, Palin announced she was stopping state work on the controversial project, earning her admirers from earmark critics and budget hawks from around the nation. The move also thrust her into the spotlight as a reform-minded newcomer. The Palin Administration, however, never gave back any of the money that was originally earmarked for the Gravina Island bridge, said Weinstein and Elerding. In fact, the Palin administration has spent "tens of millions of dollars" in federal funds to start building a road on Gravina Island that is supposed to link up to the yet-to-be-built bridge, Weinstein said. "She said 'thanks but no thanks,' but they kept the money," said Elerding about her applause line. Former state House Speaker Gail Phillips, a Republican who represented the Kenai Peninsula city of Homer, is also critical about Palin's reversal on the bridge issue. "You don't tell a group of Alaskans you support something and then go to someplace else and say you oppose it," said Phillips, who supported Palin's opponent, Democrat Tony Knowles, in the 2006 gubernatorial race.

Could someone please provide specific quotes by Palin that clearly shows she was for building this bridge. In searching the web I find a lot of second hand statements (from those that oppose her) making this claim but no direct statements from her on the issue.

Well..it is really hard to find the truth on any of this...there are plenty of left wing blogs and opponents crying this story, but I did find this: Enhanced ferry access to Gravina Island is one option under consideration, the state said. Meanwhile, work is under way on a three-mile road on Gravina Island, originally meant to connect the airport and the new bridge. State officials said last year they were going ahead with the $25 million road because the money would otherwise have to be returned to the federal government. Leighow said the road project was already under way last year when Palin stopped the bridge, and she noted that it would provide benefits of opening up new territory for development -- one of the original arguments made for the bridge spending. It is true that the road and the bridge was already started when she killed the deal..The ORIGINAL grant was 223 MILLION dollars that was earmarked....she turned it down and the state of Alaska kept 25 Million for the project stated above, since a lot of that was already built. So in effect they used what it took to finish up the road that was already started, and are going to put in an enhanced ferry, instead of the bridge, with their own funds... Now...show me anywhere a Democrat has turned down any earmarks... placeAd(); Last edited on 02:53 pm by Millennium |

I just spoke to a co-worker and asked him if he had heard her speech. He replies "no, but why does she have to bash Obama?". When I asked for specifics he couldn't remember the 10 second sound bite he heard on the news, which was OUT OF CONTEXT of the 45 minute speech she gave.

That's typical...Obama and Biden bashed Bush and McCain the whole time...but that's ok....only a liberal can see the truth as bashing...I guess the truth is painful for them..

Here's an article that quotes Palin's people on the issue. Apparently (at least, according to her), she supported the project until there were cost overruns. Here's a quote from the article: A press release issued by the governor on September 21, 2007 said she decided to cancel state work on the project because of rising cost estimates.
