"But we've been greedy for decades...politicians and banks have gone +too far+ in allowing us access"

I'm not going to get into a debate about how far was too far. Sixty years ago the idea of a 30 year mortgage would have been viewed as going too far.

The point is we are in a financial mess and the decisions to bail out the various organizations are a last ditch attempt to avoid a collapse and the pain that goes with it.

Unfortunately we are not going to cure the decades of excesses quickly, painless and without cost. Giving the government more control in order to avoid this pain is taking us down the road towards socialism.

The reality is those in power over the last forty years or so and those that elected them have squandered the future of this generation (those under 30 years old, give or take a decade). We have a responsibility to try and make it right even if it means suffering some pain in the process, since we've reaped many of the benefits.

I have no idea where to start and whatever decisions are made to really address these issues are not going to seem fair to many of those affected.

I beg to differ....The mess we are in right now can be laid on the Democrats and their willingness to let you and I and the American people suffer, so they can "take back the White House" as they love to say.

The DEMOCRATS that were assigned charge of the House Banking committee...let it fail, and did nothing

The Democrats assigned charge of the House Ways and Means committee...let it fail and did nothing

The Democrats in charge of the AIG and their companies...let it fail and did nothing...

These were the people PUT IN CHARGE of THESE programs by the Democratic leadership 2 years ago...Where have THEY been! Why did they do nothing? No foresight? Was it the fact that they were getting sweet deals? (yes) Was it the fact they were making a killing on kickbacks?( see Obama, Dodd, and Barney Frank) Yes..

Yes there's some blame to go around all right, but be damned if you think it's Bush that bankrupted it.....THis shit started a long time ago...

Now, if you want to say Bush should have taken control of all those committees, then you may have something, but that isn't the way it works when the other party gains control...

I was referring to the spending in total over the last 8 years, from the giant expansion of Medicare to Iraq and of course, up until today. I believe the level of bankruptcy has skyrocketed most under Bush's leadership compared to other Administrations. Just compare it to the Clinton Administration's debt scenario before Bush became President. If I am wrong, fine.
