Also, I believe these politicians generally town down or change their tune once they decide to run for offices. I believe that is very likely true for Obama and, as another example, Palin. I think she is more of a religious nut than her more recent materials shows. That is why looking at their earlier years is so important. It's when they were more free to show their true colors and not worry about mass appeal for maximum votes. So that puts a stronger light of trouble on Obama in my mind.

I am very suspect of Obama's associations with some very shade and unsavory characters (Wright, Phleger, Farrahkan, Ayers, Resko, etc.). Those associations should be getting attention.
Of a much greater concern to me are his plans for dramaticatically increasing the size and power of the federal government.
One of the main problems I have with all the talk of raising taxes is that it isn't connected with cutting the overall size of the federal budget. Any discussion of raising taxes that doesn't include a discussion of reducing the federal budget should sent up warning flags.
The current tax structure and servicing our huge national debt is killing our economy. I could accept a discussion of increasing taxes and cutting expenses to pay down that debt but to increase taxes to put more money into the hands of the government to spend is facilitating their irresponsibility.

Erinna:
I do think someone's religious belief can be a legitimate issue. Certainly, if Obama was a jihadist Muslim, and believed all Christians should convert or die, people would be justified in not voting for him on that basis. Similarly, if he was a member of the FLDS, and had multiple pre-teen "wives", I don't think people would vote for him -- justifiably so.
Religion isn't something you genetically inherit. You can choose to reject idiocy, and that's what makes it different from race. It's not fair to fault someone for something they have no control over. It's another thing to fault them for something they choose.
As an atheist, I wouldn't want someone to think my atheism disqualified me from public office, and obviously a law barring someone from public office because of their religion would be unconstitutional, but if someone's religion involves blowing people of opposing religions into itsy bitsy pieces, it would be hard to justify not factoring that into your vote.
