http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/10/06/foley.fallout/index.html

"Faced with fending off the backlash from the Mark Foley scandal, House Republicans took the offensive Friday, asking Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats to testify about whether they engaged in partisan trickery by releasing Foley's messages weeks before the midterm elections."

They are just freaking DETERMINED to find out who leaked their little secret...

What if it was a GOP MEMBER!!! OMG!!  then we'd have to find out which Dem PAID him to do it...

This is the punchline that is going to cause more than a few Americans to wake up and abandon the Republican party.

So much for personal responsibility, lets hang it on the Democrats!

Two can play the same game.

If the Democrats are going to claim the Republicans sat on this issue while other interns were put in jeapordy the Republicans can make the same claim about Democrats. If the Democrats new about this situation and sat on it until election time the can be accused of putting political gain ahead of the best interest of the interns.

The intern issue was being circulated around the news services last year. Are you trying to tell me that no well connect Democrat hear about this.

No -- some probably did --- But did they have a HIGHER responsibility to do something than Hastert and his appointees did?

Do you think for one moment that the Dems would not now be trumpeting something like "We told them, they ignored us" --- I haven't heard that one---at least not credibly..

so I actually DO suspect that no Dems were aware of the magnitude of the problem-- but the GOP was, and that's what sealed the lips of everyone who knew-- because they knew the Dems would make hay out of it..

While you could claim the Dems had a part because of that 'would have made hay'..

..you're also talking about the GOP political machine-- that machine has FAR and away proven to be more powerful than the Dems== they should have been able to put together an unstoppable spindoctor programme, with complete control of the issue, no matter WHAT a Dem tried to make hay out of..

Either a Dem has power over that machine, or they don't...

Again, I have not heard a hint from any of the players that any Democrat was informed of the problem.  All I hear is a theory, like the "prank," like the Soros thing, etc.   Sorry, but this crap doesn't fly anymore.

It's actually very depressing that sexual chat with a minor is going to bring down the Republican government when there are SO many disgusting and reckless acts by the Republicans that should have removed them long ago.

They're STILL desperate...

"Rep. Patrick McHenry acknowledged Sunday he had no evidence Democrats had been withholding information about then-Rep. Mark Foley's contact with teenage House pages, but the North Carolina Republican said a "question remains, were they involved."

Pressed by CNN's Wolf Blitzer several times to offer up evidence that Democrats knowingly withheld information on Foley, R-Florida, for political gain, McHenry failed to do so. But the North Carolina Republican then said "if they were not involved, they need to say clearly," on CNN's 'Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer.'"

and it STILL isn't getting them anywhere to try to shift this to somewhere else...

These republicans have no balls...they can't just accept responsibility and do the right thing.  I've known this about them for years.

I think the Republicans are very poorly advised to do anything with this sordid business other than to let it drop off the front page. They are very poorly advised to keep it in the news. There is no way they can successfully shift the responsibly credibly to Democrats; they can only hope to share it.

I don't think it taxes the imagination of the American electorate very much to believe that some Democrats knew of it or something like it with one of their own or even in this matter, and elected for less than morally pure and pristine reasons and priorities to save the perpetrator(s) and conceal it from the public eye. I expect that the public sees the system as broadly corrupt, and the forces to serve power first and principle second as pressing insistently on Congresspeople of both parties.

At issue, though, is the fact that Repubicans are in power. The only way for the electorate to voice disgust and impatience with what is going on now is to turn them out.

From that perspective, highlighting the dishonor of the Democrats--whether it existed in this particular matter or not--will IMHO do the Republicans no good whatsoever.

I agree---

At this point, even if outright deliberate hiding of Democratic knowledge of the incident  and trotting it out at the right moment COULD in fact be blamed on the Dems, as you so wisely say, the ONLY possible reaction is for the People to decide:

The Reps were the ones holding other people's balls.

We can vote them OUT for this.

We cannot vote the Dems out for this- and who was in charge anyway?

The GOP were the leadership and the bosses, they've admitted they knew,  and they've admitted they did little about it other than a verbal warning one time-

How can ANYONE somehow point enough of a finger at the Dems to wash the fact COMPLETELY off the map that a GOP member did this... other GOP members knew about it for FOUR YEARS...and the GOP leadership has denied several contacts about it---which are beginning to be proven DID happen, in spite of their denials that such info was given them

I heard via the Federal law enforcement gossip cup-and-string-at-the-watercooler network  today that people are testifying under oath and on polygraph that they DID tell the GOP leadership things that the GOP leadership are denying having been told. That should get interesting as the workweek begins.

I think Dems knew--- I think they thought (rightly) that it was a GOP issue, and if the GOP chose not to do anything about it, that was their lookout.

Given the number of people who knew, it was probably NOT a Dem who slipped the news (in fact, wasn't there a post about it BEING a GOP guy who leaked it? the name was given in that post I thought)
