....both of which I love, what other kinds of foods are high in iron?  I just had some bloodwork done and Doc said I have an iron deficiency and to take a multi-vitamin with high iron.  While I will do that, I am on enough freakin' dope (the legal kind) that I'd like to see if I can get some help with more iron-power food, than pills.

Suggestions?

Uhh....that's not gonna happen.  Just knowing what that organ does and having seen many in deer I've dressed out and the insides of dogs and cats.....there will be no eating of liver in this house.

'Preciate that suggestion, but I'd sooner crawl into a crate with 200 tarantulas.

Excellent Sources

  • Enriched breakfast cereals
  • Cooked beans and lentils
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Blackstrap Molasses

    Good Sources
  • Canned beans
  • Baked potato with skin
  • Enriched pasta
  • Canned asparagus

  • Warning: Pregnant women should not eat liver because of its very high Vitamin A content. Large amounts of Vitamin A can be harmful to the baby.

The absorption of Non-heme iron can be improved when a source of heme iron is consumed in the same meal. In addition, the iron absorption-enhancing foods can also increase the absorption of non-heme iron. While some food items can enhance iron absorption, some can inhibit or interfere iron absorption. Avoid eating them with the iron-rich foods to maximize iron absorption.

    Iron Absorption Enhancers

    • Meat/fish/poultry
    • Fruits: Orange, Orange Juice, cantaloupe, strawberries, grapefruit etc
    • Vegetables: Broccoli, brussels sprouts, tomato, tomato juice, potato, green & red peppers
    • White wine
    • Iron Absorption Inhibitors

    • Red Wine, Coffee & Tea
    • Vegetables: Spinach, chard, beet greens, rhubarb and sweet potato
    • Whole grains and bran
    • Soy products

I feel the same way......I HATE liver!  Here's more that I've heard is high in Iron.  You might want to check it out.  Grape juice with no sugar or preservatives added.  8 oz once a day.  Snack on raisins through out the day.  They're suppose to be a good source of Iron.  Even radish, kohlrabi, garlic, leek and onion!  Your best though......is the liver!

    Off-topic but serious question:

Here in OOklahoma a great deal of the deer herd is contaminated with prion disease similar to Mad Cow Disease. Do you know anyway to examine the meat for those ultra tiny little devils (prions), any tricks to determine which deer are more of a danger than they are worth?

Uh, Scott...do you hunt?  And if so, do you field-dress?

You can't tell by looking at the meat if the deer is infected, so my suggestion is to avoid hunting until this is under control, if you hunt.  If you do hunt and don't want to stop, wear gloves when you field-dress.  And you're still taking your chances.  Go fishing or something.  It's not a chance I would take.

I can dress about anything, or used to anyway. I've helped slaughter and dress pigs.
Mostly I have hunted upland birds. It's been years since I hunted deer. But I wouldn't clean a rabbit without latex gloves on a bet. Tularemia is bad enough, but CWD is not something I want to mess with.

I like my 'razor wit' to remain stroppable, not rot away from the inside.

Yeah, no blood filters for THIS kid!!

You have good suggestions here, but I just want to add, please
don't take a multi with iron. Iron "fights" with A, E, and Calcium
in your gut and you don't get proper absorption of any of 'em.
(Soooo, don't swallow your iron with a glass of milk!!)

I take the bulk of my vitamins in the morning, and then at night
I take Vit. C and iron tablet.  You can try Twinlab brand if you
can find it, it is "chelated" and you should absorb it pretty well.

Spinach is good but it can be hard for your body to pull the iron
out so if you go that route try a vinagrette on it, helps.

Personally, I'd probably go with STEAK... yum!

Good luck... I always have pulllllenty of iron content when I go
to the blood bank, so I must be doin' sumthin' right!!

Er, uhm... forgot to mention... iron can, shall we say, slow down
your lower G.I. so be careful to get a good amount of fiber in
your diet, throughout the day. (If you eat those raisins, those'll
    help!)
