I'd be interested in hearing people's experiences.  I've been looking into it.  Domain names are cheap, and it looks like, while you can't (mostly) sell them for thousands a piece like you could a few years ago, you might be able to do pretty well for yourself.  Spending $10 for a new domain and then turning around and selling it for $150 doesn't sound too bad to me.

I'm thinking about it.  A few years ago (before REALLY gettin to enjoy retirement) I registered Sacramenu.com for a restaurant menu site for coupons and stuff.

I think it's a great name for a Sacramento website but lack the drive to complete the rest of the package and (ugh) ..hire.. people to go out and sell ads.

I keep thinking of the potential and then it's time for another nap.

Is that true?!  I can't believe Apple didn't snag that domain way before someone else...

It seems to me that the toughest thing is picking a decent name.  Most of the good ones are already taken.  And the ones left seem to be worth in the $75-100 range.  That's not a bad profit if you can flip one, but you have to flip a lot of them to make a living at it.

Well, if he had that domain since '95, I guess he definitely deserves the cash, for the foresight alone! :)

If it makes you feel any better, I'm sure he paid more than $10 for it in 1995, and he's been paying the domain name registration fee ever since. :)  (No big consolation, I know, but take what you can get....)

I have it on good authority that he's paid approx. $30 per year for it.

I've officially started the selling process. :)  So far, I've sold two domains.  One of them I broke even on, and the other I ended up making about $87 on.  (I sold a domain I paid $16 (in the initial price, PayPal and Ebay fees) for $103.)

Not bad, but a little slow in terms of cash flow.

That's a great haul!  I've only gotten profits of a couple dollars each per sale.  It's harder than I thought to sell them.  You can come up with a good name, that the appraisal services (at least, the free ones) tell you is worth $50, but you might only get $20 for it, so you end up breaking even, once you factor in Ebay and PayPal.

Brian,

I tried selling several other names that I thought would be real winners, to no avail. It seems to me the .com's are the most popular. A good short name should draw more interest than a long one.
