Cockney wrote: Dukie, if you could live and work anywhere, where would it be

Somehwere in the intermountain west, in a small city with many interesting people and outdoor activities-Durango, CO, Flagstaff, AZ, Cedar City,UT, Bend, OR. That sorta place.

SF is one of the worlds great cities.  There are amazing things about it-it is drop dead gorgeous, there are tons of interesting folks, few citites have as much pretty open space nearby...

Its frighteningly expensive, and not a low stress place to live.  I think that the stress factor is more of a negative for me than it would be for many others.-because of my personality.   My first year here, I was running to work, and at 17th st, just downhill from the crest at Masonic, there was a new accord with 4 guys in suits.  As I ran past, one opened his door and put his bananna peel on the sidewalk.  I stopped, put the peel on the car roof, and told him that the city wasn't his Bloody (not the actual word I used ;) garbage can.  He stared at me as if I was mad.  ::blush::

I've had my car broken into four times in as many years, for example.

What about you, Cockney?

Flagstaff is indeed an appealing place. I haven't been to Durango in about 30 years, so I don't remember much about it.

The Central Coast of California seems like a nice place to live, too, but I think I'd have to retire there or find a job that would pay enough to support my family in another industry.

Shiroh,
Getting a good assistant is hard here too. In lab/research, I get lots of good help, but turnover is high.
Good admin help is hard to get-although fortunately we have good benefits to offer-which make sit a bit simpler than it'd otherwise be...

Central coast is nice. SLO seems interesting-maybe Avilla beach. Not as wholesome feeling as smoe places to me however-

I live about as far south in California as you can get San Diego. Your correct the cost of living here is over the top period. The strange thing is the pay scales in some of the companies for average worker is very very low.

I was born and raised right here in San Diego and I can tell you the only way to survive is to live together. My daughter and granddaughter live with me now and I can say the extra money every month is nice. I could go it on my own but I would be hard pressed and no extra money at all.

Gas cost more here than any where else in the country, just insane. If my entire family didn't live here I would consider moving out. Then again I go outside and the weather alone is why it cost so darn much to live her..:D

I found that my degrees had very little cash value in the market place. How many headhunters are out there looking for people with degrees in history or theology?

Some jobs don't require rare skills and are easily filled by those without degrees. I found that a job I had with a small manufacturing company topped out at about $35k, even when I took on new responsibilities.

Beacvuse it would be empty at $2K/month.  Most small landlords in SoCal have negative cashflow and ar counting on appreciation to keep them above water.

I'm saving and looking to buy during the crash.:cloud9:

The 1,650 sq ft house next to mine sold for $469,000 (to our surprise) a few years back. The new owner rented it out for $2,500 per month for two years (which surprised us even more), and then he sold it. I don't know what it sold for the second time (probably close to $650,000), but the temporary owner made out quite well. He bought high but sold higher. Those who have bought within the last year probably won't fare so well.

Circumstances resulted in a 50% drop in income for me this past year. In Virginia ( my area anyway which is quite beautiful but mostly rural, the average in pay for an hourly position runs between 7.00 and 10.00 per hour. A salary of 45,000.00 is monumental. I recently have been offered a position in New York. With salary, comissions, and benefits, I would probably top out at 60,000.00. After a couple of weeks of being excited at the prospect of being back in the hub of culture and diversity.. Ive decided to turn it down. I have a two bedroom, living room, dining room, small kitchen, and bath in a modest but respectable 3 story garden apartment complex. It is across the street from a college campus. The rent is 525.00 a month including my heat and water. I will not even consider having a company own me for their 60,000.00. And then take two weeks pay to cover a minimum of 1200.00 a month in rent. People are being paid wages that barely enable them to live. And no, a degree is not a guarantee of a high paying job. It is the innovative and fearless who are carving out paths of making livings that enable them to have a better quality of life. Its all part of the plan to erase the middle class, and it is working effectively and rapidly.

you're a cop and you make 16 bucks an hour?

what is this country coming to?

i'm not crazy about making certain important jobs like being a police officer very high paying because then you attract people who are just in for the money, but paying too low does the opposite, people we would want to be cops go into other careers because they can't afford to be cops.

for 15 bucks an hour you should be able to find a decent asst.

try interviewing people for whom the job would be a second household income, like housewives.

also look into local churches, you may find a mature, dependable person who just needs a decent income and benefits to round out their last 10/15 years before retiring.

Is there a sense of entitlement among young adults that makes it hard for them to keep an entry-level job?

I ask this because I've noticed temps and nre-hires asking about raises when they don't do their jobs well. They complain they're not being paid enough, but they agreed to the hourly wage in the beginning and then don't perform to the expectations of the job description. I wouldn't be surprised if they justify slacking off or stealing from the company by thinking they're underpaid.

If it isn't a sense of entitlement, what could it be? Unfiltered laziness? A combination of things? If so, a combination of what?
