I've been looking for an assistant for quite some time. The last time my corporate folks had me do one interview and let me have the say of yea or nay if they thought the candidate qualified.

In my business I need someone who can remember a number of things, keep priorities straight, work under a deadline (i.e. manage time well), and keep organized. My last assistant was great, but she went to the dealership her boyfriend works at. Finding a replacement hasn't been easy. The work is not brain surgery or rocket science, but I have been a bit disappointed with what I have seen.

What skills do you think are lacking in the hourly marketplace? Which skills are common?

I like the ads where they request the person be an absolute model citizen.  Excellent leadership and communication skills, organizational skills, needs to speak 40 languages, and be trained in every aspect of business with 50+ years of experience.

starting pay:  $11 per hour.

If someone like that came around, he/she would be my boss.

The job doesn't require any degree (not even a high school diploma), but it does require someone with verbal skills, manners, and common sense. Unfortunately, common sense is no longer common.

Sabatoge your old assistant's relationship so she breaks up with her boyfriend and offer to get her out of that dealership ;)

How can anyone in SoCal make $15 per hour?  Don't you have to make at least $300 per hour just to afford to live in a cardboard box under the viaduct?

Seriously.  $15/hr is $600/week, $2,400/month.  Assume no taxes.

A run-down 500sf shanty with a hole in the floor to crap through is worth $300k minimum.  That's $2,200 per month mortgage.  That assumes no taxes or insurance.

I can't figure out for the life of me how the economy works in SoCal.  I can only assume that every level of menial employment makes at least $200k per year.

Well, sure, menial employees make bank around here, but sub-menial people like me and my next assistant make well under $200k per year.

I don't know of anyone who would expect to be able to buy a house in So' Cal' by himself who didn't either get a college degree or gain skills necessary to make around $100k per year. Those who work for hourly wages here either rent or share the mortgage burden with someone else.

My assistant made $2,400 per month in regular hours, another few hundred in overtime, another $625 on average for unit bonuses, and an extra $150 for good CSI. That still only comes out to about $3,500 per month, but it's not bad for the work required. When I got married 8 years ago, I was making about $2,600 per month and renting. Now that my wife isn't working I've had to make substantially more than that to make ends meet and buy a house.

But who would rent an apartment in SoCal for less than it's value?  If a unit will sell for $300k, why would they rent it for less than $2,000/month?

My former assistant lived at home and used her $3,500 per month to pay for her Mercedes E350 after she put too many miles in the Infiniti G35 Sedan she had.

So the rule is either you're a millionaire or you live with your parents?

Nah, you can still make only $100k per year by yourself and live in a condo. Or you can have a household income of $200k per year and live in a shanty.

Bacc,
I can't address the situation in Socal, but in NoCal, most landlords rent for far less than what "fair market monthly payments" would be, and have since at least 1990 or so. They either bought/developed their properties prior to the run up in prices, or are banking on an increase in resale value making it worthwhile. Obviously the disconnect between rental and ownership costs can't continue indefinitely-that is one reason why smoe "experts" call the bay area a bubble waiting to burst.
