In the Sunday Wall St. Journal insert in the paper, columnist Jeff D. Opdyke related a lil story about how he lost his wife's iPod and his kid said, "Dad, if I find it will you get me a cell phone" and Jeffy said ...yes.

So kid finds it and Jeffy don't wanna GET the kid a phone. So he SUBSTITUTES a .... (are ya ready) ...a "DAY WITH DAD"..... coupon!!!!

An it's good for.... in his words:

"I made him a 'Day With Dad' coupon that he can use any time and that ENTITLES him (emphasis mine) to an entire day PLAYING (again my emphasis) with me; he chooses what to do, where to eat lunch, and I cannot say no to anything."
.......................................

I was so impressed that I sent him an email to "lovemoney@wsj.com"

It went...........

There is no greater torment to a man than that of a dishonorable father.

In one unfortunate event, you managed to teach your son that a "promise" would lead to a "workaround." How execrably awful for him.

So he caught you at a weak moment and used his ingenuity to extract a promise of something he wanted. Clever kid. And you, as an "expedience" granted the item.

Only to withdraw it after he performed as agreed.

And what do you offer in exchange? A whole DAY with the promise breaker. The dishonoring SOB who, using the superior power of "Dad" is now ready to stoop to a caviling day of "not saying 'no'." This just gets worse and worse.

Were I the kid (actually, I have no way of knowing if this is a repetitive thing in your house) but if it were, I would smilingly accept that "Great Day" coupon. And stash it in a drawer.

If you can't afford a cellphone for the kid, give him a TrackPhone that has prepaid minutes. At least salvage your word of honor and demonstrate that his DAD is not someone who will say anything on a moment's notice and take it back if the kid performs.

I really hope you take these words to heart. That boy is sad. Or should be. Given the situation as you describe it in your article.

I was thinking that as I read your explanation.  If the kid's smart, he'll do okay.  ::thumbs::  Of course, a son shouldn't have to trick his father into giving him what was promised!::nono::
