I still need someone to tell me what will propel the US economy to the optimistic expectations of so many.

Is the rise due to mutual fund buying?  Does that just reflect "extra" money that people don't know what to do with so are blithely "investing" as Bob Brinker says?

I just don't see an economy with home equity loans GONE being able to perform against a dropping dollar that will make EVERYTHING more expensive.   Except labor.

Someone clue me in.

I'd pick commercial real estate for the long term inflation-guard-continuing-income vehicle.

I like COMMERCIAL reits.

NOT residential.  Commercial ONLY.

That's true, real estate is a good one for that, but when I said mainstream I meant the average person in America .. most can't invest in real estate like that but can in stocks, like in 401Ks, etc.

Au contraire, mon frere.

Take a look at the NYSE symbols:

O

NNN

SNH

IGR

Now, I'll grant ya that it'll take a whoppin  20-30 bucks or so to get a share, but them are some sweeties that charge COMMERCIAL tenants ALL the EXPENSES and pass the rest to shareholders.

Monthly.

First 2 are the top commercial REITS for conservative play

3rd one is elder care homes

and the 4th is INTERNATIONAL real estate.

I'm almost MARRIED to O.

Oh, I thought you meant physical real estate, as in, tangible assets. You ARE talking about stock, just a certain kind. :)

When all is said and done, the return on a good REIT is about the same as with the physical property.  A...bit... less (and not tax advantaged) but considering tenants and vacancies, I like the REIT better.

I don't hold REITs (and some other "stocks") in the same consideration as ...STOCKS.. that return nothing and depend on growth.

Semantics, probly.

Don't put your confidence there or all your eggs in that basket. The dollar is in trouble and the market is dollar based and hyper-inflated.

Me?  Good luck finding someone more diversified or anti-confident!  :)  I don't go by the current situation, I've always been diversified since I started reading about asset allocation based upon time-frame after college (when I was paranoid about not making the mistakes my parents made):

About the dollar - good ways to diversify against the dollar, while diversifying by region and asset type, are to be in global bonds funds that buy the bonds of foreign Governments.

AWF and FAX.   AWF is better because a larger portion is in SOVEREIGN bonds.  I had FAX and dumped it when I discovered how much commercial paper was in it.

VIGILANCE.

DAMNED VIGILANCE!!

But for ULTIMATE protection against the frailties of ALL governments (think US dollar collapse and the effect on the countries who sell TO us)

NOTHING matches gold and silver.

Money since time began.
