How to develop an effective website for an existing offline business?

Can an offline local business really benefit from a website?

Most businesses think they are going to quickly stimulate additional sales by putting up a new website. On a regular basis, I'm asked why these websites bomb when they look nice, easy to navigate and etc.

You may be surprised at my responses. Let's discuss this. Please share your thoughts, questions and expertise. I can already guess many of the potential questions on this matter. We'll even look at your website if you like, and make some suggestion. Internet marketing is a craft, like any other business, and requires specialized knowledge.

This is a very important issue to new online marketers.

I think so too! If they don't join in NO KUDOS for THEM! (I still can't figure out what a Kudos is even after you explained. Guess you can't teach an ole dog, new tricks)!

No prob, Mav!  Here's a little big again.

kudos

n : an expression of approval and commendation

You can give it by clicking on someone's kudos meter in their post.  The more you receive, the more you have, the more powerful it is when you give it.  Give it sparingly and read near the bottom of this Intro post: CLICK HERE!

It works best when there are lots of people, right now, it's going to be volatile and isn't very meaningful.  It works best when there is a larger pool.

Offline businesses can absolutely benefit from opening a website - no question.  However, very few business owners understand how to leverage this new tool.

Most people launch their website, dutifully populate their keywords, and wait for the visitors to start pouring in.  Of course, this doesn't happen.  There are millions of sites on the Internet, and no matter how good yours looks, nobody is going to find it unless it's promoted properly.

My recommendation is to start out small and use your website strictly to communicate with your existing offline customers.  Develop a database of email addresses to help you keep in touch with the people you deal with regularly.  You can even publish a monthly newsletter to offer your loyal customers to special deals that can't be found in the store.  This creates instant value to visit your website, which means people will begin to check back regularly.

Once this starts to happen, you can begin to offer more information or even upgrade to an e-commerce offering.  At this point, you will understand your website, and will be better prepared to deal with new customers.

That was excellent advice, Poletown!  I don't think most people have the patience to do that, which is why there is such a high failure rate.  A pet-peeve I have is how so many people are so short-term focused.

Morning Maverick

I have a new (1yr old) offline business and a web site that is basically another form of in-expensive advertising. I am curious how to get more seach engines to pick it up, in a cost effective manner. Please feel free to pick it apart and offer any suggestions. I am not a web wizard but I can manage a bit of HTML. I believe in simple. Thanks

Pete

how long has the website been up?.. google's been known to make new websites wait a few months before they'll list them very highly.. its referred to as the "google sandbox"..

The site has been up about a year. I did the manual submission to most search engines, and if I enter entire business name it comes up. I am thinking more along the lines of keyword searches. ie city name/rental/snow/boating ect.

Thanks

It was a great suggestion using your website as a communication tool for your existing customers but I would be more interested in success stories of how you used your website to drive new "qualified" buyers interested in what you offer into your off line business. I think most site owners feel massive amounts of hits equals success but I feel quality over quantity makes more sense and most likely will be more cost effective in the long run.

Sorry about his absence, Mercurynut - many of us miss him.  Maverick mentioned weeks ago that he had to go dive deep on a Project ... I hope he is back soon but I really don't know when that will be.  I can tell you that he is "watching" this topic, meaning, like for anyone who "watches" a topic, he gets sent an email whenever someone replies in this thread.

Come back, Mav!

I just figured with the number of people with websites even if its only an affiliate website would chime in and let us know what works for them. I personally like to use classified ads with only a teaser line and then a web page to visit for more info.
