Welp, everyone keeps talking about the upcoming food shortage and how this is just the beginning of expensive food explosion.  So, how can investors make money off of this?  Are there mutual funds or index funds made to track such things.  I have to research.  The closest I ever got to that was checking out the companies that produce and deliver foods but there may be funds that also include raw food commodity exposure as well.  The raw commodities themselves may be more desirable if all you want is to participate in the food cost rise verses the profitability of food companies.

Your thoughts?

Morningstar.com and Google are great research buddies.  :D  I'll report back here when I find something interesting.

So the cheap food won't explode?

Sorry....I can't help it.  It's the smartass in me.

That's OK, your smartass addiction actual leads to an important question - will the high end food market explode as much as the basics and low end range of foods?

Inquiring smartasses want to know.  ::coffee::

Just doing a quick search, I can see that agricultural funds have had gains of around 40-50% this last year.  There are agricultural funds like this one:

Mostly soybean, wheat, sugar, corn ...

I have no way of knowing if I am correct, but it would be my guess that the high end food markets wouldn't be as profitable as the basics right now because people don't think they are or actually aren't as well financially well off as they were the previous year.  Therefore, not as many people may be buying more expensive foods.  Just my opinion...

I think that's been the big complaint so far, Susan. All the basic foods are costing a lot of money now. That seems to be the big problem because that effects the poor so directly.

When the basic staples are in trouble the fresh veges are not far behind. I am learning how to "can" and will increase my garden x2 this year. They are alot of work, but with organic compost I will not get the byproduct of having to use pesticides. My seeds are on order as I realized back in Dec. that good seed  is hard to come by and may just do my own seeds from this year for next year. Screw the seed sellers. And whatever you do DO NOT buy seed from home depot or Wally world. Go to a local greenhouse that does their own seedlings...........moguitar may have been a nutty guy but he knew his plants. Thanks Mo!.....
