When shopping for a new bank, what are some questions you would ask the person who sets up the new account?  I have a TON of things I want to know about my next bank, since the one I use now SUCKS.  (Chase; aka JP Morgan.  Dont' deal with these people!!!)  I want to know about customer service and if it is available 24/7.  If I call for customer service at 0300, will I talk to a real live person, or get those irritating voice prompt systems that I despise?

What is the online service like?  How easy is it to use?  That is the single and only good thing about my current bank.  The rest is crap.

The bank I end up going with will have to sell me hard, and take a lot of time to convince me to trust my money with them.  I have 5 or 6 on my list now to look into and with Bullet's plans for a new line of work when he is home, our future bank is going to be trusted with some large sums of money.  Between the new career, his lawsuit against the state, and my medical malpractice case, we look to have a considerable amount of money.  It's going to take some very good people to convince me to trust anyone with the potential amount.

So who has ideas about what should be asked of a new bank that I may not have thought of yet?

I don't have bank recommendations, although I am a big fan of INGdirect.com and have used them for a long time due to their high savings rates. My real comment to you is that when you get your list narrowed down, don't forget to factor in the actual savings rate they will offer you on various balances held with them. That's assuming you are going to keep all that money as liquid cash savings verses earning more interest with it via CDs, bonds, etc. or putting it into tax-sheltered vehicles like IRAs.  If you go bank CDs, compare their rates as well.

All that fancy-schmancy CD's stuff is on Bullet.  He's got a better head for money than I do.  I just know I don't like to spend it!  He's a whiz with budgets, savings plans, etc.  But I will have him do some research about that stuff now, Frank, thanks!

Meh, INGDirect isn't liquid enough for this situation, IMO. Takes too long to get to the money. I have seven ING accounts - all for sinking funds - and I've never had it take less than three days to get the money out. I've had it take as long as eight. Don't get me wrong, I love ING, but I don't think it's right for this instance. Besides, you need a brick-and-mortar bank account to link to for ING, and I think that's what she's looking for.

I agree, that's why I didn't recommend ING to her.  It's not a good primary bank deal obviously.  You can't even deal with anyone in person, ever.  But when and if they ever got to the CD stage or were shopping for the best savings/CD rates at bankrate.com and all that, it was a candidate to look at so I thought I would mention it.

My real point was just a reminder about comparing the actual rate your money will be earning in the bank you pick.  She didn't mention that as a factor so I wanted to be a good boy and mention it.
