Many people have the dream of owning their own business.  I have an idea for a business that I think would sell pretty well.  I have been thinking about this for years, actually.  In another thread elsewhere, it was being dicussed how people can get around security devices and steal stuff anyway.  I mentioned that as a 17-year bartender, I have been able to get past every single step bar owners take to prevent theft.  From cameras, to those computerized metered pour spouts, and everything in between.

Sis came up with the thought that becoming a private investigator would add some polish to my sales pitch.  After looking into that possibility, becoming a PI is not an option for me in Michigan.

If you were a bar owner and someone approached you to investigate their business and employees to show them who was stealing, who was dealing dope, etc., would you take them up on it?  What would be a reasonable cost for this, considering what could be saved by removing those stealing from them?

I would need several sessions in each bar, the price list for their drinks, and the schedules of the employees so I would have the chance to watch all of them.  I would not need access to their financial books or their cash registers.

Opinions, please!

Well, I use to do what you're talking about UTR only it was called SHOPPERS when we'd go to the airport or other places that hired us.  If we actually had to investigate a serious theft problem, they hired us as actual new employees.  That was hard because we needed to learn how to do the job at hand, as well as the job we were being hired for.  We had to watch literally everything!  Sometimes we'd catch them right off, others it took months!

I just reinstated my PI license in this state.  I had to pass a hell of a test in order to get it reinstated too.  I now have my own business under a LLC license.  I'm not however, going to do any surveillance work at this stage.  Too many fast car trips, too many threats against me and my family, too many hours sitting in surveillance vans, too many out of town trips, too many..........period!!

If you're good at noticing things that are going on, and can get exact details, because the reports to the client need to be very detailed, you should consider it.  What you charge is, EX amount an hour + gas and all expenses!

I think the bar ideal is great. I have worked in bars also, although I served the drinks instead of being behind the bar making them. Why can you not do this in Michigan?

The last bar I worked in was the worst as far as stealing goes. The owner even knew her bartender was cleaning her out. But, everyone liked him so she chose to ignore it. How stupid is that? Ringing up mixed drinks for the price of a beer, and then pocketing the money right in plain view of everyone. I told her I could make her a lot more money if she put me behind the bar (not saying anything about the asshole behind the bar robbing her blind) but she liked me serving the drinks because I could take care of the whole bar by myself. Before I got there they had 2 servers, sometimes 3.

I don't know about other PI jobs and what the details would be, but the bar sounds like a sure thing. One thing I just thought of though, If I owned a bar, I would have a security camera on the bar and cash register at all times.

Well Erinna, she would need to call and get an idea of what the going rate is in her area.  I would have thought you'd know that.  Then, she needs to figure out her expense's, and charge accordingly.  I give your sister credit with enough going for her, to be able to figure some of this out...........don't you?  Besides that, she can always e-mail me with detail questions.

Why can you not do this in Michigan?

If you're asking why I can't bartend in Michigan, that is because there are NO bartending (or any other) jobs to be had in this miserable state.  If you're asking why I can't be a PI here, that is because the requirements include a degree in criminology or LE, and 2 years of experience in investigations.

I would have a security camera on the bar and cash register at all times.

You're not looking for a bartending job, so don't bill yourself as such. You're offering a a security service.

Go to a couple bars and ask to do it for free in exchange for references and word of mouth recommendations to other businesses. Nothing proves the value of a service more than a couple satisfied customers.

You don't have to be a PI to provide security service like this, though it would simplify things.

Is a two year degree sufficient, if so find one on-line somewhere?

Sounds like your talents would apply to other businesses as well, obviously restaurants and such.

Regards,

Scott

I would only reference my bartending experience in order to let the client know that I know how to run a bar.  I was GM at one of the places I worked, so I know the ins and outs.

Now that is smart.  Sis even said how bar owners/managers talk and that would be a way to get word out, especially if/when I catch someone.  I'd have to draw up some kind of contract/disclaimer that explains I do NOT handle the punishment, just get the owner or manager the proof they need to handle shit from there.   Good thought, Popeye!

They could, but I don't know restaurants nearly as well as I know bartending.  But for future expansion, that's another good thought.

Plenty of good input here, people.  Thanks!  Keep it coming!

Gee...you charge what you charge.  So glad you pointed that out.  I never would've figured that out all on my own.

Kinda cheesy one, hit "more" in the emoticons to get the bigger list, 2nd row from the bottom, far left.  Green:  ::rolling::
