Are you working in the dungeons for someone else and you keep reading all the information on "How to fire your boss?"

Are you considering starting an online business but don't know where to start?  Maybe we can help you. We WON"T suggest specific income opportunities here, but can make observations about what you need to do to get started, review your marketing ideas, a point you in the right direction.

So :welcome: to the thread: Everything you wanted to know about starting a new business but didn't know what to ask!"

So NOW it's time to ask our forum panel.

Maverick

OK I'll bite.

I aim to move to Florida in the next year or two. Hopefully I don't lose money on my house between now and then.

I want to go to the west coast. Tampa/St Pete area. Preferably near the beaches.

I have owned my own business before but never really pushed to full success. Why? Bad selfish ex husband who didn't like me to not be at his beck and call. He was jealous of the horses. I had a pony ride business. Made enough money to keep me in horses, competition and feed my stock. No profit.

I am now disabled, divorced, on SSI because ex f***** up my chance of SSD.

I started my pony ride business from no money and a borrowed pony to a full stable of breedng racing horses and a string of 10 ponies and 5 employees. But no profits.

Anyway, living here we cannot afford to get married. But hopefully we'll do better in Fla. In fact, I am confident we will.

What I would LOVE to have, and I could physically do now with my messed up back and all... is have a little beach bar that sells REAL smoothies, fruit salad, snacks.

I am willing to forgoe buying a new house and renting in Fla and use the money that I might have from the sale of this house to start such a business.

So? would an idea like this fly?

Sorry about the delay in responding, but I've been out of touch on a project the last week.  The following should be a good starting point.

You've likely picked the right area for a concession business in the Tampa area.  Tampa is in a growing phase with about 1 million people and a major tourist attraction covering 112 square miles.

TAMPA BAY FACTS

·  Over 25 universities, colleges and higher education facilities including the Big East's largest: the
University of South Florida.

·  An overall lease rate of $17.89, class "A" rate of $20.44, and a diversity of options for industrial and distribution facilities.

·  Three international airports and three seaports including Florida's largest seaport - the Port of Tampa.

·   An innovative labor force of more than 1.8 million people in a market that attracts 185+ new residents each day.

·  State income tax credits for new job creation, up to $5,000 ($7,500 in an enterprise zone) per new employee.

·  No sales and use tax on goods made in the state for export outside the state, and no personal income tax.

Contact:

Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber

12901 Village Blvd
Madeira Beach, FL 33708 - 2656

This is always a good place to start, They can point you in the right direction

Generally, concession businesses require special permits from the local government, and only a specific number may be available. Basically, you have some initial homework to do. The type of concession you desire and the local governing agency that will provide the requirements and fees to set one up.

You may also consider a mobile concession stand near the beach and one that operates at major events, like concerts, fairs, and etc. These mobile stands and vans are often available on eBay for reasonable cost. I've seen many of them there. Also, Malls have Kiosks that might interest you.

Consider contacting a business broker in Tampa to see what might be for sale. You may not find what your looking for but might get some good information through your inquiry.
As a woman, you may qualify for a business loan guaranteed by the SBA (http://sba.gov). If your credit is ok, and you have some equity in your house, you may be able to leverage yourself into your new business through a loan. Women are entering businesses at a phenomenal rate and there are many state and government programs that may benefit you.

First comes the homework

I suggest learning as much about the Tampa market as possible. Here are some links you may desire to visit.  You can contact some of the following sources for specific information and they may guide you to the right source you need.
FREE and low cost sources for starting a new business and creating a business plan
Once you have the basic answers to you question about starting a new business, you be better equipped to decide if you still want to, the potential for success, and if you have the means to get started.

Regards,

Maverick

Wow thanks Maverick! I am already ahead of you on the SBA though. Not a helpful bunch if you don't own a house I'm afraid.

I figured I'd be living in the area for close to a year  before we a) find the right place to settle forever and b) then know the area and it's potential.

Now I like your idea of a truck stand! I already have half of that and would simply have to get a tag along kind of thing! Plus I would have my business 'with me' when I close for the night and not have to worry about  expensive overhead. Good idea!
now we see if it's permissible. I don't want anything trashy looking or cheesy either. Appearances are everything when you want people to actually EAT what you serve! Roach coaches - ick. The name alone has kept me from so much as having a glass of water from them.

Now there is no need to apologize for your delay. I figured you were busy

Thanks again Maverick!

Another thought,

A cleaver way to use an older vehicle for a mobile unit is to decorate it in a theme. You see mini trucks with big bugs on the roof for extermination companies, and complete vehicles like Oscar Myers Weiner Mobile. If you could come up with a cleaver theme you vehicle could look pretty cool and be a fantastic advertising vehicle.

This is probably a dumb example, but what if it was made to look like a giant sandwich or banana split. You get the point. I know a man that names all of his pizza's after beetle songs, like "Lucy in the Sky," and etc.  If you could make a creatively named menu, you might be able to carry that theme to your vehicle. Just a thought!

Maverick

Again, thanks so much Maverick!

And.... my apologies for my delay in replying! That rogue Frank done moved the darn post and I had no idea where it was until I saw your picture! Besides, I have been busy working on my own new website! LOL

Anyway, the 'artistic' part is easy! It's the start up part that will kill me. You see I live what I have aptly named a 'momentarian'. This man is always saying, "I'll get to it momentarily"

You have no idea how exasperating that is to someone like me! I have ants in my pants! LOL I'm one of those who gets an idea or 'bug' in my head and I got to run with it NOW. Right as the moment strikes! I live on inspiration!

He lives for the moment. *sighs* But like I said, we'll most likely get this house ready to sell in the spring.

THEN we will probably need to rent for a couple months here before we move out of state. Why? Not too sure at the moment on how viable the info is, but I'll be looking further into this one. They just enacted an exit tax here! Would you believe it? They are keeping people hostage here in the Republik! You got to pay to leave! What a bunch of crap!

I shall keep you posted on our progress. And the info I glean from the supposed tax. (that info came from my 'momentarian'. I've been too lazy to look it up myself yet!)
