Seriously?  I can see that.  I do find their coffee to be excellent and strong, so I think caffeine addiction and strong coffee play a role.  Other coffee places seem to have such weak coffee to me now, I can't go back.  We buy the bulk load at Costco, a giant super bulk discount place.  It's rebranded for them but has the same design and is Starbuck's coffee in reality.

Calling their servers "baristas", training them to perform in a strictly prescribed manner, decorating their stores in a tasteful contemporary manner, inventing new terms for their product sizes, and serving a quality product set them apart. There are other coffee chains with a few of those traits, but the new terms set Starbucks apart.

They give their clients the ability to feel like they are hip coffee experts by ordering in their terms.

"Barista, give me a venti decaf French roast mochaccino."

I wrote reviews for a site that paid only in Starbucks giftcards, we had no starbucks at the time! But I earned $100's and then sold them at the auctions.

My stepmother is related to to some of the original investors in Starbucks. Their sucess is a combination of luck (like all business), timing, and hard work. Simply put, they built up a local concept, bought out others around them and continued to grow. Along the way they maximized their purchasing power with the justification of their size and volume of buying. And maybe most importantly, they came along at the right time for coffee and similar products and their name because part of our popular culture, further cementing their place in society.

Continuing on, they kept buying, outspending, out advertising, and growing beyond their competitors.  Like any other successful chain they also had superior advertising, marketing, packaging and promotion.

I would say that their success is due to a combination of factors, but also luck, hard work, and funding.

HEY!!   I'm from "Starbucks" land.  It was one of the first chain coffee boutique's, if you will.   The large city has a few intimate places to get a GOOD cup of coffee, but Starbucks opened the outskirts!  You can hit the Mall, the movie, drive-thru, just about anywhere you go, you'll find a good place to relax in style with a GOOD cup of JAVA!  :cool:

It's a pretty simple formula... the customer gets what is wanted, how it is wanted, pretty much the same way every time, in a comfortable and non-threatening setting.  It's a pretty standardized and unfeeling warm snuggly ::grhug::, but it can be yours for a few bucks (or for me, $5.80... don't ask :? )...
