How do you find a good company to work with now a days and make money, with all the new get rich quick deals your new found online friends are sending to you.
Being a good card player might help

Just like Poker You have to “ know when to hold them and when to fold them”, if your going to make any money. Just like in any card game, you cannot win every hand.
You have to know the odds of the game.

I even the odds out a little bit by learning more about who is behind the program. If they don’t have the information on their site about who they are or any contact information about themselves, I’m gone.

One thing I do that tells me a lot about the person behind the scenes is I try to get under their skin just a little. Just enough to see how they react to John Q Public.
You can find out a lot about a person doing that.
Do you want to work with a person who has a really nice web site and one typo on it or a dead link and when you tell him about it they get irritated?

This is another thing I watch for. Web site design. I see a lot of sites where nobody did any proof reading or never used spell check, or their page takes too long to load or they put links on that didn’t go anyplace.

When I see that I get under their skin a little bit and ask them how they expect people to trust them as a professional if they can’t write or spell.
It gets interesting the responses you get.
I’ve had it happen to me also, when I got in a hurry and didn’t use spell check.

After 8 years online I have noticed, those that get irritated, they don’t last.

Just use a little common sense.
If they are a start up and have links that are deal, or typos, or a lot of hype, do a little research and find out who the people are behind the scenes.
Find out what kind of people they are.

I recently joined a company and the web site was a cluttered mess.
Had all kinds of punctuation and spelling errors. The kind you shy away from, But I had to help this person before I went on my way, So I told him how bad his site was.

I got a wonderful reply, a job offer and a really good explanation. His editor had just been in a car wreck and he wasn’t able to find one on such short notice. He had just put on a promotion and had to get the information out, although he knew his grammar would be poor.

I met a really nice person, joined his company and have had more success there than anything I’ve seen in a long time. If I wouldn’t have taken the time to find out who he was I might still be looking. I bet my hand on this one and won.  Take my advice and find out who the people are behind the scenes.
By the way this is a pretty good forum.
I already played my hand and met the Judge. :-)

Hi Sdcowboy, great post!  I found that to be excellent advice.  That's a powerful way to find out some good information about a company.

"One thing I do that tells me a lot about the person behind the scenes is I try to get under their skin just a little. Just enough to see how they react to John Q Public.

This one speaks to the old "you can tell someone's true colors by how they handle conflict."  You can see lots of windows into lots of things with that - from principles to maturity.

"After 8 years online I have noticed, those that get irritated, they don’t last."

This one speaks to the lack of people either being willing to think long-term or operate with long-term principles.  Everyone is so damn short-term focused.

The advice and lessons in your post can apply to so many things and people, not just webistes and companies - I love it!  Great way to see their quality of judgement and outlook.

Well put, Judge! I forget the percentage I read, but it could be that something like 90% of all websites fail because people give up on them.

Patience. Patience. And then more patience! :broke:

Good post... I run a few online sites and the oldest one (only 9 months) is doing very well.  Funny you mention poker though because one of my sites is a poker site.  But I digress... almost all businesses will lose money or make little to no profit the first few years.  It's just hard to do otherwise.  You can't start something from scratch and expect to run a gold mine.  There are rare occasions few and far in between where this does happen but 99% of the time, you will have to pay your dues and work your ass of to get where you want to be.

MH, what's the primary way a poker site like yours makes money?

Through affiliate accounts.  When people click the banner ads and download their software we get a % of all money that they rake from that person.  We are also coming up with some software to have hosted on our site that will cost about $2/mo or $20/yr to help out with stat keeping and analyzing hand that they player has played.  It doesn't seem like much to charge but if you get a client base 5,000 paying $2/mo, it adds up very quickly.

Plus, we plan to open a store shortly that will have books, tables, chips, apparel and an invention that we've come up with that we are working on getting a patent on.  The store will be a nice addition to bring money in.  But I think our real money maker will be our two ideas that we have... the poker analyst software and our invention we are working on.

The affiliate accounts are all supplements and we will use that money to give back to our members by throwing big free tournaments for them.  After all, it's their money!  So by giving back the money that they have given us, we feel we can keep a happy group of people.

What puts me off businesses is no logo or a logo that looks like they did it them selves. I don't mind businesses creating their own website but some hav'nt even reserched what a site this decade should look like. This to me says they don't care that much about their own image. if they don't take their own business seriously how are they going to treat other businesses. They don't hire a professional to design their business image because their not willing to bet money on their own business.
