I find it frustrating that everyone in the business office knows how much I make each month. In fact, if the manufacturer sends me bonus money for selling the products they are promoting at the time, someone from the business office has to open it (and they always check to see how much I got) before I can pick up the bonus check.

Why does this bother me?

1) On especially good months, others become envious. "Why does he get so much commission when his job isn't so hard?" "I work hard, so why don't I get nearly as much working hourly?"

It's hard to work with people who hate you for making more money than they do.

2) On good months, those who know how much I make expect me to buy them things. I'll buy food and gifts for people when I feel like it, and I don't appreciate it when they think I am obligated to do so.

3) On bad months they pretend to pity me. I don't want your "Too bad" remarks or to hear how much someone else made. I'm not in competition with my coworkers-- I'm trying to earn as much as I can to provide for my family regardless of what others do.

When you get right down to it, what business is it of mine to find out how much others make or of others to find out how much I make if they don't influence each other? That is, I don't make less when they make more or vice versa. So why are people so nosey as to pry into these things?

I agree, and many companies have confidentiality rules which forbid disclosure of pay and pay rates to third parties.

We have this at my company. The boys are all on various pay rates dependant on ability and length of time with the company. They all know that if they disclose their pay rate to another member of staff they will be given a warning or possible dismissal.

We had staff members in the past that discussed their incomes and it caused major problems with jealousy and resentment. The only person that know hows much they all earn now is me! otherwise they wouldn't get paid lol.

Someone in your business office needs a good thump in the head.

Your salary is no one's business except your GM's and your wife's (unfortunately, Uncle Sam makes it his business also).

Maybe you need to have a conversation with the GM?

BTW - I know my assistant's salary because I am his advocate to get more. That's the only reason why, and I don't communicate it with anyone else.

That's just wrong!  Nobody should be gossiping about your salary or bonus money.

Salary and bonuses are some the most guarded types of information here at work.

It's comforting to know most businesses have common sense.

I didn't realize how public my commission earnings were until around Christmas time. Someone in the business office asked if I was going to buy my wife an expensive diamond for Christmas. When I told her I couldn't afford it, she said, "I've seen your paychecks, and you can afford it."

I knew my bonus checks were open to criticism because of the odd policy of having someone from the business office open my mail before handing it to me. Some of my bonus checks have equalled the hourly workers' monthly pay, so the policy certainly doesn't engender kind feelings from whoever opened it and saw how much I made.

I'll talk to my GM and ask him to have the controller exercise a bit more confidentiality when dealing with pay issues.

I don't have to worry about that problem...I get paid the same as everyone else with my job in New Mexico

3 degrees, (two engineering, 1 education)  11 years of college, 14 years teaching

= $32,000/ year

= crap poverty level.

Is that legal? I mean I can understand prisons opening prisoner's mail but your private mail whether it be in your workplace or home has laws protecting the privacy of it!

Jeez, I am pissed as it is because they want to revalue all the property here in the county and wnat to come into my house and take pictures to do this. Needless to say I am giving a hard time over this and there will be a contingent at the next town hall meeting with torches and pitchforks!

We dont' have personal taxes here in NJ like Va has and i looked at the constitution of NJ and there says nothing about coming into your house for tax evaluation. There wasn't much in regard to one's right to privacy either but that will be another mob with pitchforks and torches if I am here another year.

I'm with Kitten.  if someone wants in my home and they aren't the police, they'd better come in force and armed.

I have a big problem with people that think they have more authority and power than they really do.  They other day some checkout girl wanted my driver's license to scan. (I was buying beer.)

I told her to forget it.  I only give my license to cops and judges.

How is she supposed to know you're not funneling beer to terrorists? :dunno:

I was told the opening of all mail coming to the dealership was so they could be sure I wasn't taking kickbacks (i.e. selling cars below market value and having the broker cut me check for my cooperation).

I can have my bonus checks set up for automatic deposit so prying eyes won't see them, but I don't know how to stop the accountant and check printer from talking to others in the office about my regular commission checks.

One of my coworkers knew he was getting a bonus check for $750, and it arrived on a Friday. He asked an office worker for the check and was told he couldn't have it because, "The controller isn't here to open it, and she won't be in until Monday." He was mad at not being able to get his own money just because the store has a policy of the controller inspecting all incoming mail.

I still think there may be some legal issue with opening your mail regardless of where it comes from.

I find that wrong on so many levels and I would be looking more into the legality and privacy of your mail instead of bitching on who knows what you make or get in bonuses.

Simply tell them to mind their own business and if they want more money they too should do something to earn more instead of minding your business. It would be more productive to their financial health.

I do believe it is legal for an employer to open or assign someone to open all incoming mail to the business regardless of who it is addressed to.

The more serious issue is the violation of privacy by people discussing what is in the mail with people that have no need to know.

The GM needs to be reminded that the blabber mouths are violating privacy and creating a risk that can affect others as well as the company.  They are also violating the trust given them to do their job.

I once had a fellow working for me who was very VERY good.  I kept raising his pay until he finally blabbed it.   Started a near mutiny amongst the rest of the workers who just "did their job."

It was his last "unscheduled" raise.

Too stupid to reward any further.  Other than the contract requirements.
