What a run-up so far this year!   My REIT mutual fund was up almost 2% today!

That being said, since the first of the year, I've moved some more to cash, and a little more to International and Emerging Markets.  Today I moved a little more into cash (now about 30% of my retirement savings, total).

What do the folks here think?  Are we on the precipice of a domestic stock market crash, or will we continue to climb the "wall of worry?"  (The goal, of course, is to swoop in with dry powder after everyone jumps out the window of their office buildings. . . .)

I agree.  It is looking topped off.  90% of the stocks in my watch list are way fat!  I am reluctant to buy in.

However I am buying some underdogs that have been taking an undeserved beating over the last few months.

My ROTH IRAs are maturing and are rolling into new ones at 6.25% APR, that's kinda nice.

I think if the Feds hold rates until almost fall the market will be flat.  A good time for building cash and maybe some bargain shopping.

I am thinking that the key will be to move money in little pieces, moving stock investments to cash if they look dead, and incrementally adding small pieces into sectors that are hot.

I am waiting for some real direction in the market to determine my next move.

Where are you getting 6.25%? That sounds pretty high for a Money Market Fund or CD. . . .

Not too hard to get 6-7% in corporate bonds.

International mutual funds that invest in large cap and mid cap seem to be popular and growing.  At home I am looking for hard core cutting edge technology.  The kind that changes the way we live.  We need a direction to move on that will spawn the technology we have to sustain some growth!

My Roth IRAs are with Pentagon Federal Credit Union.  When I got the rate, I did a google search and could not find anything close!!

I guess it was the APR that had me thinking this was cash.

The return on the cash  part of the IRA is a lame 1.25.

Just checked the website and in less than 2 weeks the rates have gone down to 5.5 for the same 3 year IRA.

Don't you pay more in commissions and/or transaction fees  if you do it in smaller increments?

Well, the IRA is just your retirement account.  It can be placed in any sort of investment:  stocks, bonds or -- as you did -- cash.   It's almost always cash that goes in, though.

I just got a new short-term CD at 4.9%, which seems to be a fairly decent rate right now. . . .

I agree that international seems to be a good defensive position.

Iwog's concerns about the entire US economy collapsing due to overextended credit does resonate with me. . . .

An IRA is just an account (brokerage, normally) with special tax treatment and rules. Anything you can buy through a brokerage, from a Gold ETF to a General Motors corporate bond, can be in an IRA. Generally speaking, for most people saving for retirement, you want to take advantage of the tax treatment and have investments that will genreate higher interest, dividends, and capital gains than cash since it won't be taxed and the snowball will be allowed to compound faster. For example, if you keep half your total worth in retirement accounts, and wanted to be half cash, you should consider keeping the cash out of the retirement account so that you won't pay as much in taxes. Another example is foreign stuff - in a taxable account, you have to worry about the complicated accounting of foreign taxation.

Wall Street is probably keeping one eye on oil and the other on the Fed and is coming across very nervous.  It’s not taking much to get a reaction.
Two Fed Presidents said today that rates will go up if inflation does not settle down (or something to that effect).  I can’t find the article I read on this today.
The Toronto exchange is getting a workout.
The extended Arctic cold snap I am in.  My furnace and pellet stove are getting a workout. Further upstate they have 8 feet of snow.  It takes a lot of gas to run plows and blowers.  Oil wil get a boost from demand.
