Philanthropic Dreams

phi·lan·thro·py  [fi-lan-thruh-pee]

altruistic concern for human welfare and advancement, usually manifested by donations of money, property, or work to needy persons, by endowment of institutions of learning and hospitals, and by generosity to other socially useful purposes.
Scenario:  You have been given custody of a sizable endowment totalling 3.5 Million USD.  How will you spend this money?  Will you invest some of it?  What portion will you use for philanthropic endeavors?  In your opinion, what is the best use for the money?

I am anxious to read your answers!

I would invest it in education for parents and children as to how to avoid obesity (and all later obesity related diseases) as they grow.

My hope would be that this would set off a spiralling chain reaction as those children grow and educate their children.

I would first build a modest house that is designed to be energy efficient and easily sustainable.  Use alternate sources of energy for it and so forth.  Next I would invest in alternate energy research geared to make homes more easily sustainable. I would also invest in civilian space exploration.

HAMSTER:

That is certainly noble!  Obesity is an "expanding" (forgive me!) health concern with "enormous" (forgive me, again!) health risks.  I joke because I live with it myself.

Seriously, that is a noble cause.

I was reading in the Harvard Mental Health Review that obesity has been linked to depression.  Morbidly obese depressed patients whom lost at least 20% (I think that is correct?) of their excess weight experience significant reduction of depressive symptoms.

Of course, obesity and its attending disorders are becoming a huge drain upon the public health system, as well.  The Centers for Disease Control here in the US have officially termed it an epidemic.  It seems poor nutritional quality of modern foods is partly to blame.

That is really great, Hamster.  You are working toward financial freedom and you just may have the opportunity to realize your dream.

AQUILA:

Cool!  I would definitely build a modest, energy-efficient home, as well.  A sustainable, well-built home base is important.

Space exploration, huh?  Very cool!

Anyone else?

what would a 3.5 endowment yield annually? something like 3-4 hundred grand?

that's not much these days, not enough to make major impacts directly.

i'd go with a percy ross kind Philanthropy, identifying needy people that could really make strides if one or two burdens were relieved, like getting an operation or a new refridgerator, helping out the single mom who is working and doing the right things but just can't afford to have her car fixed. the kid who is struggling to make something of himself but can't afford internet access. things like that.

The best use of the money would be me buying a small island and turning it into an enclosed, fenced island full of deadly traps and cyborg killer droids.

Thrown Into this enclosed island death trap would be the worlds most irritating and undeserving celebrities, politicians, preachers, criminals, scumbags and musicians.

Then I and my team of hunter killer cyborgs would hunt them down and kill them on live pay per view TV. All proceeds would go to charitable causes.

The amount generated for charity would I believe be astronomical !

"And Howard Stern has somehow reached the last level, he is so near the final gateway !, he has avoided being shot, electrocuted, hung, eaten, burned alive and impaled on titanium spikes !, but now to access the exit gateway he has to pick a chance card !"

Drum roll

"OH NO he's picked an "ironic fate" card !, and here comes a homicidal, genocidal 20 foot inflatable of Anna Nicole Smith !, and yes folks she is suffocating him to death on her enourmous six feet wide latex busoms !, OH he came so close !, but in the end no cigar !, bad luck here Howard !"

"Ladies and gentlelman thanks to your calls, texts and e-mails we have raised over 20 million dollars for cancer and aids research ! Howard your sacrifice will be remembered !".
