 Are you telling me that the downhill in debt rise, from 2001 to 2003 was because of an economy slump?

Sounds to me like some more figures need to be included...ie overall figures and not just these to get the BIG PICTURE.

No I mean when our markets do well (go up a lot or keep going up), more people tend to be bullish, trade, hype stocks online, put more money into stocks, and borrow money to do it (margin). :)

I believe the debt (margin borrowing) in the chart is a reflection of market performance, not the War. In other words, that chart looks like our stock market chart! The better the market did, the more gamblers and risk-takers drooled and borrowed in an attempt to leverage more money to make more money.

It's the money people borrow to buy stocks.

Margin debt exaggerates stock market moves to the upside.  In 2000, the amount of margin debt set a new all time record, and that extra money helped push the tech stocks to an insane high.

Now in 2007we've exceeded that record and more people are putting borrowed money into the stock market than ever before.  This is a very bearish sign because margin calls (the brokerage forcing a trader to either pay more money or liquidate immediately) can turn a down day into a stock market crash.

I only posted it because it was interesting.  I don't think the stock market or the level of margin debt is going to be a significant factor in the coming depression, although DEBT is certainly the name of our destroyer.  Right now I'm betting on this:

Real Estate market crash ---> Record forclosures and defaults ---> Bank failures (Check out Novastar Financial) ---> General economic slowdown ---> Federal reserve panics, can't lower rates without killing the dollar, can't raise rates without killing the economy ---> Worldwide loss of faith in our currency ---> Double-digit interest rates and inflation ---> Dollar collapses, imports collapse, and interest rates skyrocket --->  Huge cost of borrowing applied to the most credit dependent nation on earth destroys the consumer class ---> Depression.

Buy gold.  (or silver)
