After selling our house we have around 55k to invest somewhere until the market cools off or we decide to build/buy.  I'd like to keep it close at hand say 6 months to use as a down payment on our next home in the spring or somewhere close. But I don't want to let it just "waste" sitting around.

Short or unknown short-natured time-frame PLUS money being important (verses play gambling money) = SAFE & LIQUID.  Something like high-yield savings account, like ING direct or competitors.  6 months you need the money?  Could be a little sooner?  I would go high-yield FDIC insured liquid savings.  You are crazy to take on any significant risk when you need it that liquid and your time frame is that short.

You can get around 5% now and still be really safe.  Do that instead of letting it sit in a normal bank account earning 1% or whatever.  Don't risk your principle in this situation.

Check into I-bonds. Virtually no risk and decent rate of return, especially for a short-term time frame. Talk to Iwog, he actually knows quite a bit about these bonds.

I opened an account at Huntington Bank in the Michigan area, and I had a 6 month interest rate of 4.25%.  May not be the best option, but if you are looking for about 6 months, it fits the bill, and it is there if and when you may need it.

Thanks guys. I was thinking some 6 month "safe" investment, it could be a year or longer before we find or move on with building. Or the right house may show up next week but I don't what this just sitting around, may as well keep it in my safe as opposed to leaving it in savings.

Right now?  Go with a high yield money market account and keep it liquid.

Ultrashort bond funds are less than 1 year but not entirely risk free. Think I'd go cd or mm. Use due diligence, shop around and compare rates. There is plenty of sites on the www that you can use to compare rates in your area or whereever. Or you can buy Finest Known poptop Moderns. ;)

Put at least half of it in silver and/or gold.

A $1000 face value bag of junk silver currently sells for $7980 at AMPEX, and they'll buy it back for $7780, (about a 2.5% round trip comission, which is amazingly good for precious metals) I would suggest buying a few and putting them in the bank or burying them under your house.

Otherwise a high yielding energy stock.  Natural gas has temporarily fallen to multi-year lows which means to me an excellent opportunity.

Try PGH (Pengrowth energy trust) currently paying over 13%, TPP (Teppco Partners) paying over 7%, or the shipping stock I bought last February DSX (Diana shipping) which is currently yielding over 10% and ships coal and raw materials.

Whatever you do, plan for a recession very soon.
