When PTL's financial (ahem) irregularities (ahem) came to light, Tammy Faye said that she was not aware of the scheme. I believe her.

As for the gay stuff, Tammy Faye never shied away from the gay community, and PTL did not engage in the kind of gay-baiting that most of the other televangelists do. She did not typically bring up the subject, but when asked she would reply that God loves everyone and that we all have things to ask forgiveness for. That's kinda weak support if you ask me, but the gay community embraced her as some sort of a diva.

I wish all the others were as good as Tammy Faye.

She was naive enough that I wouldn't doubt that she did believe it was coming from God. As far as I know, examining the bookkeeping was not her department, and she really didn't know that they were selling more timeshares than they had. The whole scheme was like overbooking a hotel . . . on steroids.

well as usual we disagree Construct. :D...she was as naive as a rattlesnake. and knew damn well that money she was living like a billionaire on was coming from (mostly) poor and dumb gullible southern bible-belt types. that was their target victim class. people who could barely afford food. 'send money and God will save you'. 'or at least i'll be able to keep tammy faye in mascara'. ::bat::

Well, the money wasn't to buy salvation. The Bakkers preached a sort of prosperity gospel--that God would reward faith offerings with more money (often by unexplained gifts (("God told me to give you this $10,000." That sort of thing.)) ). It's a swindle, but it's not always a malicious swindle because there are enough Bible verses to similar effect that it's easy enough to pin the swindle on God--which is precisely where I pin it.

Being a cop LC, you are suspicious of every one and everything.(I, too am always a little suspicious of what I hear) We don't know for sure if Tammy Faye was lying. Only she knows. As for hashing out what PTL did, that was a long time ago. That bridge is gone and the damn unleashed.

I am sorry to see anyone pass on, especially from cancer.

I don't think she's being suspicious, she just wasn't born yesterday. :bigwink:

I just noticed, Smitty, that you're in Murfreesboro, home of Tennessee Temple. What would John R. Rice have had to say about her?
