Many people are already aware of the "Medical Information Bureau" (MIB) which is a nationwide database of medical information regarding ordinary people like you or I. You go to the doctor and he tells you your BP is too high, most likely that info is stored in the MIB and accessible by subscribing companies (insurance). This information is used by life and health insurance companies to check for any adverse medical conditions prior to deciding to issue a health insurance or life insurance policy.

Here is the MIB's own statement as to what they are all bout.

MIB Group, Inc. ("MIB") is an association of over 500 U.S. and Canadian life insurance companies providing information and database management services to the financial services industry. Organized in 1902, MIB's core fraud protection services protect insurers, policyholders and applicants from attempts to conceal or omit information material to the sound and equitable underwriting of life, health, disability, and long term care insurance. Fair pricing of insurance products is largely dependent on accurate "risk assessment", "risk classification", and "risk selection". A determination of these factors begins with the assurance of accurate health information supplied on the insurance application concerning the proposed insured.

Did you know that there is also a Prescription Drug Database?  Roughly 80% of all prescriptions issued in the U.S. are stored in the database for similar use as the MIB.

Just thought you'd like to know. BTW - The MIB was founded in 1902 so you can't blame Bush.

That's the same thing all those store branded discount cards are used for. When you buy your groceries the data of what you bought and when is sold.

So how many dozen eggs and packages of bacon have you bought since you got your Giant Eagle "Advantage" card?

True, however it's not sold in a personally identifiable way.  They use the data in ways like

"Ok, Mr. Procter and Mr. Gamble, your detergent sold this many units when we had it up on the eye level shelf in our stores, and sold this many (fewer) units on the bottom.  We're asking for $$$ for the middle shelf location and $ for the bottom shelf.  Which will it be?"

or

"Ok, Mrs. Smith.  Your pies sold ### units when we put them on sale for $$ and only # units when they were full price.  We'll consider putting them on sale again, how much of a kickback are we gonna get for each unit sold if we put them on sale again?"

Your scenario does seem a lot more logical Robert, but there was a clause in the "Advantage" card application disclosure that specifically mentioned insurance companies (as a result of that information combined with them wanting my social I declined to sign up). Maybe it's like demographic research?

Something like: "People in Pennsyltucky are 12% more likely than the national average to buy sausages in bulk."

I heard a story about an old man who slipped in a grocery store and was injured. This was no kind of fraud scheme, he really was injured. When faced with all of the bills from his injury, he contacted a lawyer and decided to seek some kind of compensation for his med bills.
The grocery store had one of those club card memberships and he was a member. When they investigated his purchasing patterns, the discovered that he purchased large quatities of alcohol and purchased it often.
The store said that if he continued with seeking damages, that they would have to expose his buying habbits ........... he dropped the case.
Sad if you axe me.

I used my safeway club card every day but if I ever purchase meds, I do NOT use it then. It's none of their freakin business when it comes to what kinds of perscriptions I use.

If I have to use a card to get a good deal at your store I don't shop at your store.

Can John Q. Public login to the MIB and look at anyone's medical information (or their own) ???

Maybe we can pin some lesser issue on BUSH!  It's his fault that it's on the internet (oh, no, Gore created that evil monstrosity, so it's really his fault!)
