Fox' quail pics made me think of feeding the birds in winter.

when i lived all those years in Mass. my parents and i had quite a feeding station for the snowy months, my Dad bought tons of seeds! it was a a pleasure to watch them all merrily eating, many varieties all together.

do you feed them? what type do you get?

is there anything prettier than a cardinal in the snow?

It would be hard to say no. The color contrast is incredible!

My family has always feed the birds during the snow months.   My neighbor down on the river, is feeding the Canadian Geese and ducks this year too.  I'll see if I can get any pictures of all of them feeding  LC.

My parents always fed the birds.  Carl (my husband) and I have two bird feeders on our back deck and a wildlife feeder in the backyard.  We'd have more feeders but only have a townhouse with not enough room.

In one feeder we have a finch food that includes thistle and it attracts the cardinals, housefinches, and an occasional goldfinch.  The other birdfeeder has safflower seeds and it attracts cardinals, finches, sparrows, wrens and chickadees. We have the tops of these feeders adjusted so the large crows, starlings, and bluejays can't get into the feeders.

We put peanuts for the squirrels into the wildlife feeder, and this not only feeds them but keeps them away from the bird feeders.

Heyyyyyyyyy! I don't wear a "Black" Belt with white pants!!! ::shades::  It would be white pants, & white belt!!! ::sgrin:: Also, I don't like, & or ever wear a hat either!!! :bigwink: So. . .

As far a feeding the animals, I do my fair share here. The many Deer feast on all the hemlock trees we have on our property. They trim the bottom 5 feet & below on them all. While, the squirrels feast on the bird feeders, that I fill at least twice a week. Lately, I throw out bread for the squirrels as well, & the birds can then steal from them first when they can!

Anyway, I never knew that all Cardnals didn't go South for the winter! Untill I saw them at the feeders we have. In fact, we still have what I believe to be sparrows, finch, crows, & several varieties I don't know. I always thought all birds went South for the winter. Wrong!

There is a park south of here called Mendon Ponds park.  There is an area of the park where if you go, stand still and just hold some bird seed in your hand, the birds will come to you and eat right out of your hands.

The Cardinals look great in the snow and I think the females are a brownish color. Once I looked out and saw a bunch of feathers and blood and thought a cat had gotten a bird( the snow showed much detail) But after closer inspection there were no cat tracks anywheres near so I decided it must have been a Falcon. And I missed it!

They are brownish, but you can see the hints of red.  My Granny's favorite bird ever was the cardinal.
