do any people here rely on, or check with BBB before making decisions on big-ticket services?

i filed a complaint with them today, first time i ever did so.

when i moved (at a cost of $4000.) they took 10 days to go from fla. to mass. their truck broke down in PA. and NOBODY would return my calls or tell me truck had broken down! i was left hanging for days with no clue where my belongings were. ::pull::

but that's not the reason i finally filed a complaint.

i had packed all my stuff in plastic bins, and labeled the bins. i have only just started on kitchen. my bin marked  'food processor' was empty!! i am talking $350. for processor, (a cuisinart) & $100. for box of attachments. i have called moving co. for a week, with no response or returned call. ::frown:: :X ::devilangry:: they had transferred my stuff into another truck, made a bloody mess of my things. and clearly at that point, some thief got my food processor. maybe i shouldn't have labeled my bins at all!

well believe me, the entire sheriff dept. down there where their office is knows about it! i hope to hell i can cost them some business.

so...when people go to check on companies, do they see the complaints filed with BBB? (of course BBB has to notify company, that's fine.)

LC, I actually did call the BBB years ago and checked on a business I was going to contract.  I was in fact told over the phone that there were complaints about the business.  They didn't go into detail, just that there were complaints!  They even told me how many complaints.

I have not used them, but my husband has filed complaints with them against vendors he has dealt with through his work.  He said that if noting else, the places will have a complaint showing up.

Did you get insurance for the move?  Geesh, you cannot win, I really feel bad for you.

now that a person can research businesses, or file complaints online, i am hoping the text of my complaint will be seen.

in the meantime, it seems that their trucks might get pulled over for moving violations. ::sgrin::

as for insurance, sure, 60 cents a pound. i want a new food processor. rat bastard thieves.

The BBB works but you have to be proactive on the front end. Hopefully they will nail this bunch of Yahoo's and pay you for your lost items. That should be in your moving policy somewhere. Damn you should of checked each bin when they finally got there.

The BBB is usually ...useless.

BBB member businesses operate on the basis of voluntary self-regulation.

It's a good gig for the BBB to get members to pay dues to get a door sticker, though.

You are 100% correct. I also want to add that unless a business is actually registered with the BBB that any complaints are futile. No one will ever know about it.

I've found the BBB to be pretty useless. I have however found that filing a complaint with the state attorney general with a cc to the company usually gets immediate and tangible results from the company.

The BBB is toothless, not so the SAG and they know that.

I agree. I once bought a big screen TV and when it went bad a couple of months later, still under warranty, then did'nt want to fix it. When I threatened them with the states attorney general, I had a brand new TV within 2 weeks.

I find them worthless. Complaining doesn't do a bit of good. People just drop things after they file a complaint so it's great for the shady businesses. But if you call up a week after the complaint they'll tell you there are no complaints against the business.

My dad always used to say that the BBB exists to protect the fly by night businesses from new competition.

I don't deal with them at all after my experience.

i received a letter from BBB today with movers' response. they said i didn't file a claim! i only called them about 6 times. and they'd be happy to consider it. liars.

i will go ahead and file claim; and i normally agree about state attny. office. but with them you need proof. i don't have receipt or proof that it was stolen.

i have worked with states attorneys for years, and understand them and their criteria. hell, i could barely get a murder case on the docket!
