So, what will happen to this guy for creating a panic and having them close the beaches? Anything?

Are there more sharks in this area than there are in Florida?

probably a slap on the wrist, he'll say he's a nutter. maybe a fine, you don't mess with tourist dollars on the cape.

i don't know the shark populations, but there are large species up here, they like colder water. it was very unusual to have a great white caught off st. augustine a couple years ago. down in the keys, i dived most of my life, and have seen big schools of large hammerheads.

more bite cases in florida, bull sharks very common and aggressive. i don't recall last fatal attack up here, but a great white killed a boy in buzzards bay a few years back. and one went up a river in NJ and killed 3 or 4 people in 1936. that incident inspired the JAWS book.

a very large shark was seen a few days ago tearing up a seal off martha's vineyard. cap'n said he thought it was a white.

Activists launch Monster bid to stop shark hunt.
Animal rights activists are appealing to the organizer of this week’s Oak Bluffs Monster Shark Tournament to cancel the contest - but the group says the hunt will go on.

“These are just cash-driven tournaments resulting in the destructive exploitation of these sharks,” said John Grandy, senior vice president for wildlife and habitat protection at The Humane Society of the United States.

“These animals don’t reproduce until they’re 10 to 15 years old, so it makes them particularly vulnerable,” Grandy said. “And they bear their young live, just like people.”

The Humane Society and the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals recently sent Boston Big Game Fishing Club President Steven James a letter, urging him to call off the 22nd annual tournament, which runs from tomorrow to Saturday.

But James shot back at the tournament’s opponents, telling them to call off their sport-fishing “jihad.”

“We ask that the HSUS please leave the science of fishery management to the experts and scientists. . .who are specifically chartered with managing and rebuilding the North Western Atlantic shark stocks,” he said.

“It is inappropriate to blame U.S. recreational fishermen and U.S. commercial fishermen for the overfishing done in other parts of the world,” James added. “The fishermen in the U.S. operate under the most strict regulations of any country in the world.”

Sharks caught by fishermen in tournaments suffer greatly, according to the Humane Society. “People have to remember that animals feel pain just as we do,” MSPCA spokesman Brian Adams said. “The fact that people may have grown accustomed to hunting and fishing doesn’t make it OK.”

The war of words came a day after a great white shark washed up on Nantucket and a week after a lifeguard spotted a large shark off South Beach on Martha’s Vineyard.

NANTUCKET (WBZ) ? After performing a necropsy on a great white shark that washed up dead in Nantucket on Monday, marine biologists still do not know what killed it.

Officials with the Division of Marine Fisheries said biologists were not able to determine a cause of death after dissecting the shark on Wednesday. They said the female shark was healthy and was only a few years old.

Biologists hope further tests will determine the cause of the shark's death.

However, biologists determined the shark's stomach was empty at the time of its death.

The six and a half foot shark turned up on a beach near Sheep Pond Road in Nantucket.

Last week, a shark sighting was reported off South Beach on Martha's Vineyard, but could not be confirmed.

The female Great White shark was about 6-and-a-half feet long and a couple of years old.

Roads risky for spadefoot toads
PROVINCETOWN — The two-lane federal road is built through a wetland and it's crossed by hundreds or sometimes thousands of spadefoots making their way to lower wet spots to mate.

I was driving down a road once and for about 500 yards the road was covered in frrogs! I thought it was leaves until I applied the brakes and started sliding sideways then I hit pavement again, what a bloody rush!

Wildlife officials seize more than 100 African clawed frogs, which are prohibited because they can pose a serious danger to frogs and even entire ecosystems.
