About three weeks or so ago, I had to go to the funeral of the wife of a friend of mine. I have known this couple for about 11 years, and they had been very happily married for 64 years. She was the focus of all his affections and love. When she had a heart attack a few years back, he took over everything that she did. He did the cleaning, the cooking, the shopping, everything. He would get her up in the morning, and help her dress, and get ready for the day, and then get her breakfast.

A few months ago, she got really bad, and was spending most of the time in bed. He waited on her hand and foot. I went by for a visit one day, and he and I sat for over an hour talking about first one thing and then another. Before I left, he told me he didn't think he could go on if she died.

When ever I would see them at church, or out some where, She would always give me a big hug. He would give me a mean glare, and call me a dirty rotten scoundrel, then shake my hand a slap me on the back. This went on for years. When his wife passed away, and I went to the funeral home, he told me, "well, you won't be getting any more hugs from my wife, and I'm not about to hug you." We talked for a while, and when I started to leave, we shook hands, and he gave me a big hug, and called me a dirty rotten scoundrel.

Yesterday, Tuesday, July 2nd, my friends nephew called him to say he was coming to visit. When he got to his home, my friend was sitting in the usual place where he and his wife would always sit. They had two chairs in the garage, and they would raise the door, and sit and talk. When his nephew got out of his car, he said his uncle had a pistol in his hand, and put it to his head and pulled the trigger. We bury my friend on Friday. I pray his soul finds rest and peace.

I'm more than a bit stunned. I had just eaten supper last night, when I got the call. I almost lost my supper. He and I were good friends, even though he was a good 30 to 35 years my senior.

I really hope so. I used to watch them sit in church and hold hands like two young teens. He would hold onto her when they would leave church, and keep her steady. They were one of the greatest couples I have ever known. I wonder what it is like to love and be loved like that.

Sorry to hear of this. One can only imagine the anguish or agony which would drive someone to this.

I guess after losing a life long mate, and that being the only family he really had, except for a few nephews, I guess he just didn't have the will to go on.

it happens when a person is so loyal to the one they love and when that person dies then they have nothing to live for their world is gone and they see no reason to live with the pain they feel

Not many can understand that type of love, but it does exist

Thank you dazd. It's hard to bury two friends in a months time. This was already going to be a rough month. July 12, would have been my youngest daughters 32nd birthday.

I need to make a correction here. He was 20 to 25 years my senior, and not 30 to 35 years.
