Skyrocketing Gas Prices Lead to Plunge in Drive-by Shootings Poor Gangs Biggest Victims in Latest Economic Discrimination (Disassociated Press) Los Angeles-- The sagging economy and rising gas prices are hitting every stratum of gangs in California, with those in the poorest areas feeling the biggest pinch. At the Orange County Sheriff’s Gang Task Force, officials said they're seeing even upper-middle class gangs struggling to make ends meet. One shooting suspect, who identified himself as “EZ OC”, said, “It’s getting tough— yo. My mom wouldn’t let me borrow her Hummer to do a drive-by in Newport because it’s too far from our crib in Coto, so I ended up having to use my nanny’s Prius and couldn’t outrun the cops.” Many gangs are seeing costs to kill enemy gang members rise, and with rising gas prices, drive-by shootings often suffer. Biggy-B from the Athens Crips said attempts to commit walk-by and run-by shootings have met with failure. “Walk-bys make you a target, know what I mean? And you can’t hit [stuff] when you try a run-by.” The Santa Monica City Council has organized a task force to assist its city’s poorest gangs. Among proposals are free bus vouchers to encourage gang members to try shooting from public transportation. The task force estimates it will cost about $27,000 per hybrid bus in its fleet to make shooter-friendly modifications, and they are studying route change proposals to accommodate gang members’ requests. San Francisco plans to subsidize electric scooter leases to gang members. “I’m afraid we’re having to take this measure to cut costs,” said city Gang Assistance Relief Program (GARP) Manager, Rebecca Liebowitz. “The cost of flying undocumented workers out of the city to avoid Federal prosecution has made us tighten our belts. I wish we could help these underprivileged gangsters by giving them electric cars, but leasing them scooters is the best we can do now,” Liebowitz lamented. So far, city officials haven't had to turn anyone away, but nationwide, some gangs have actually been forced to stop shootings altogether. “My cousin in Memphis can’t do [stuff] right now, so I guess it could be worse,” sighed Biggy-B. “But if things don’t get better soon I’m going to have to get a regular job.”
