I have found several ways to opt out of excess junk mail and credit card offers.
Here are some sites:
To opt out of pre-screened credit card offers go to: http://www.optoutprescreen.com This one allows you to electronically opt out for 5 years. To opt out permanantly, you need to do so by mail. For myself, I signed up under my maiden name as well as my married name. Even after 6 years of marriage, I am still getting credit card offers in my maiden name. Did my husband too.

For catalogs you can go to http://www.catalogchoice.com This one requires a bit more effort on your part...each time you get an unwanted catalog you go to this site and add the catalog to a list of ones you do not want to get.

To opt out of other junk mail (flyers and envelopes rather than catalogs) call 1-888-5optout.

To opt out of many catalogs at once, go to http://www.abacus.com as most catalog companies use this one. I would probably use the first one I gave, as there are 2 or 3 catalogs we actually like getting.

Junk mail is out of control. I'm actually sick of fighting it.

I was expecially glad to find the one for credit card offers.  Between Rick and I, we get them almost daily.  Sometimes 2 or 3 a day.  What with the threat of identity theft out there, I think this is a great idea.

Always return a return mailer  (check for any "codes" and obliterate) and if itz an ENVELOPE, fill it with something.
Be sure to fill in SOME blanks on cards.  Think up a name.
They have to pay the postage.

Or better yet, ill out nonsense on the card, put a fine layer of white glue on the face and THEN put it in the envelope, squeeze tightly for a couple minutes to set the glue.

Someone has to take the time to try to retrieve the contents of the envelope as well as costing postage.

Regards,
Scott

The TUFF thing to stop is a collection agency.  I bin gettin calls for some Vera somebody and I tried the #4 ...phone... option of "not at this number."

No dice.  Got more calls.  Finally went with #1 "you are this person" and got a rep.

Whom I told to take my number OFF.

Seems that one is working.

I got no love for deadbeats but turning off the collectors is a bitch.

If you suspect the company is using an automatic letter opener to sort their mail out, try putting some epoxy resin inside the envelope on one end, and the hardener on the other end.

They won't mix until the letter opener mixes them.

Scott
