 I just called her she was in another town and does not know if the house is OK.

At midday today, emergency response teams went into action as a severe storm ripped through the middle of the state.

"We’re set up at the state Emergency Operations Center in Concord," said James Van Dongen, spokesman at the Department of Emergency Services, shortly after noon.

Van Dongen said he was working to confirm reports of buildings, trees and power lines down in New Durham, Alton, Deerfield, Barnstead, Epsom and Northwood.

"We can’t confirm a tornado has touched down, but straight-line wind can do a lot of damage too," he said.

No official word was immediately available on injuries as emergency officials scrambled to respond to calls.

Shortly before noon, emergency crews from several towns were dispatched to Epsom after reports of "collapsed houses" on the north shore of Northwood Lake in the areas of Sleepy Hollow Lane and Lakeshore Road.

Officials in Manchester decided against setting up an emergency operations center, but the fire department quickly sent its building collapse and rescue unit into Epsom.

An Alton Fire Department dispatcher said the town and surrounding communities were without power.

The dispatcher said they had about a half dozen reports around 12:30 p.m. of trees on cars, power lines on streets and roadways blocked, but no reports of injuries.

The Epsom fire chief reported that 50 to 100 homes in the town had been damaged.

A witness at Heritage Hardware in Northwood told UnionLeader.com that trees are down, power out and roofs off houses on the west side of Northwood Lake.

In Deerfield, a UnionLeader.com reporter saw large trees and power lines toppled on Mountain Road, Mount Delight Road and Griffin Road.

The damage extended into neighboring towns and northeast into Alton as a severe line of storms moved northeast into Maine.

People were reportedly trapped in cars beneath fallen power lines in Alton.

Tornado warnings were twice posted, but have been dropped. Flood warnings have been posted in much of eastern New Hampshire.

Meteorologist Kirk Apffel in Gray, Maine, said someone reported a tornado to police in Northwood, just east of Epsom, and a funnel cloud was reported 20 miles south in Atkinson.

Sandra Glazer of 621 Stockbridge Corner Road, Alton, said a "mini-tornado" took out power lines and and phone lines all along her street down to Route 28, about 1/4 mile away.

Glazer, 71, said she has lived in New England her entire life and has never seen anything like the storm that uprooted deciduous, maple and fir trees in her yard, some about three feet in diameter. Glazer said she does not know how the trees missed hitting her home.

"It was really crazy weather," she said when reached on her cellular phone. "This came on so suddenly. It got very dark and there was a period of torrential rain." The storm lasted for only three or four minutes, she said.

About 1 p.m., Glazer and her daughter drove around Alton to see the storm damage. She said trees are down all around Merrymeeting Lake for about 1 1/2 mile by 1/2 mile stretch.

At 1:10 p.m., a Hampton resident reported blue skies to the east of North Beach with windsurfers using parasails to speeding along the surf -- ignoring an ominous black line of clouds rolling into the resort area from the south and west. A whistle-blowing lifeguard then ordered everyone off the beach. However, the storm passed through the area without damage.

UnionLeader.com reporters and photographers are en route to the affected towns. Readers who have information or eyewitness accounts are urged to contact reporter Pat Grossmith at 800-562-8218 x327. Please send any photos to cperkins@unionleader.com.

I am from Omaha Ne and we had a major storm a few weeks ago. Thankfully our house and trees were spared, but not so lucky for those a street down from me. We were without power for 2 1/2 days and some were out for much longer than that.

I am not sure if they figured out what exactly hit us, but my hubby said that it was just like a hurricane which described all the damaging wind and rain. Others have called it straight line winds. I have never been in a storm like that.

The weather systems are changing all around. Kind of scray - I think.

I hope that your mom and her house is okay.

yeah, that's right, they did used to do that whole "in the stocks" thing up in Yankeeland, didn't they!

We just tarred and feathered 'em down here, and ran them out of town on a rail!
And if they came back, well, we've got rope and trees...
::sgrin::

Just got back, some big assed 3ft wide trees are down. 3 houses lost a roof, a house got flattened and they found a baby 1 1/2 yrs old and they are looking for the parents. A boat got tossed from the lake onto dry land. What a freakin mess! I took a couple chain saws and chains with me in case I had to get a tree out of the road. Moms fine!::wheww::

Yes I know a fireman in Epsom and he called and said they both would be OK. This is only supposed to happen in western Mass. No power yet and it may be a few days. I brought 3-5 gal tubs of water and a small generator. The power may be out a couple of days.

A lady got killed in Deerfield though, I do not know the reason. About 20 miles from me.

I've seen tornados, and tornado damage too many times to think about. I know first hand what they are capable of doing. I would rather face a hurricane. At least with them, you have enough advanced warning to get the hell out of Dodge. With a tornado, you might get the warning just as it sits down on top of you. They can't predict when or where they will hit, only that they are near. I have seen them touch down, and go right back up, and I've seen them hit the ground, and stay for a couple of miles. Nasty things.
