I am thinking of replacing "just" my troublesome *&%^$$# "harddrive" with a new Dell Harddrive. It comes with Windows "Vista" Home basic, SP1 installed. I thought I recall someone who just got windows vista a little while ago stated they were not that happy with it, but was still learning it's features. Anybody have any updated info in Windows Vista?                                                                                                 Mainly just looking to play "on line games", & open emails, & such. Don't even know how Windows affects that, if it even does?

Also, shows how really PC nerdy I am, I'm pretty sure that I can reuse my existing monitor/cables, & mouse & keybord from my old system, correct, yes?

Serious replies appreciated!

Hey Cars, I have a HP setup with Vista, and I'm not thrilled with the e-mail set up, nor the Restore system!!  I went from Windows XP to the Vista.  Other than those two things, I think it's pretty much the same as the XP I had.  I never play games, so I can't address that issue.

Thanks for your reply Fox. I currently have Windows XP, which I like. The problem is it's on a stinkin "Compaq" hard drive. I was at a really bad ponit in time (4 years ago) when I mistakenly bought this hard drive & monitor. Over those years, it continually seems to loose free memory capacity. And each time it does, it operates slower, & slower! The free space dropped from 80% when new, to 77% to 75%, each time operating much slower. When it dropped to 70%, it really got sluggish. Reciently, it dropped down to 66, and now "64"%, and hangs up & freezes during opening /operating anything!

So, I'm looking at getting the Dell HD but the one advertised has Windows Vista. When I call them to order it, they are supposedly abe to build one to suit customer needs, so I'll just tell them to install Windows XP!

There ya go!  If it were me, that's what I'd do.  I would love to have my XP back.  As long as Windows programs continue to work with the XP version, I wouldn't get Vista at all.  It just happened to be on my computer when I bought it.

do you ever do any clean up on your computer? sounds like you need to do a disc cleanup and a defrag, possibly a scan disc.

Get XP, ditch the Vista crap, and do what Dauber said.

Vista is the worst thing that Redmond ever put out.
Makes ME look stable.

No one should buy Vista. At all.

Yes, defrag "daily", as well as dump all cookies & temp files daily!  The performance is so da_n slow, even freezes up, if I don't!

Thanks Thumper, appreciate the link. It's going to take me a little while to get to do all those things! Lots of luck to me, I'll need it!

One thing youi might do is try this software:
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

and post the results here.

That will help those of us in IT help you decide if your system is OK , but would run better with XP on it.

Cars Window Vista Home edition is OK just takes a bit of tweaking on certain things. What may be issues is drivers for you printers, camera, scanner etc. Most of the time Vista has now made sure they have most of all the drivers you may need to just plug and play your equipment.

If necessary just go to your hardware site and download drive for VISTA and you will be good to go.

I agree with Carla on this.  Vista initially had a lot of problems, but most of those are resolved now.  Vista still runs slower relative to XP on the same software, but you'd expect that from a later version of an OS.

The one thing I do still have against Vista is the change they made to recording.  Apparently, you can no longer record off the sound card.   There were a lot of useful applications for that which are gone now.

Thanks all for you valuable inputs, thay are much appreciated! :D Looks like maybe I  may not be getting that Dell after all. I now realize that the best thing for me to do is, go to Best Buy, or Circuit City, or the like, where they have putter weenies, that can help me choose a setup that will suit my needs! (I think I'll rest a lot easier doing that!)
