Paparazzi are out of control

It's been nearly 11 years since paparazzi chasing a car in which England's Princess Diana was riding pushed it to speeds that resulted in a high-speed accident — and tragedy.

Has the paparazzi's ardor for the celebrity photo cooled in the years since? Are you kidding? If anything, photographers have fewer qualms now of violating the privacy of stars. California passed a law several years ago that set penalties for paparazzi who go too far. And recently, the Los Angeles City Council discussed an even tougher proposal to stem aggressive behavior by celebrity hunters.

Press freedom is paramount here. America doesn't need more laws governing the behavior of journalists, even reprehensible ones like the paparazzo who staked out the school attended by Julia Roberts' children in the hopes of snaring her in his lens. Roberts became enraged, as have George Clooney and Halle Berry and other stars whose ventures into public stir the paparazzi.

Who's to blame? How about the consumer? We're star-struck to the point of making a celebrity out of a talentless Paris Hilton.

What America needs is a culture that respects its stars and heroes even as it is fascinated by them. Readers and viewers should support celebrities when they complain about being barraged.

If the public said no more, the celebrity magazines that pay for these photos would say no more, too.

And that would be a good tribute to a princess who died too young.

Here is my 2 cents on this one.  I understand that part of being a celebrity is being in the public eye...you are out in public, chances are someone will be there to take your picture.

But..on the other hand, are we, the public, so hard up for "entertainment news" that we need to see pictures of every move they make?  Cripes..if you are famous it seems you cannot even take your kids to the park without being followed by hoards of photogs.

They are out there taking pics of celebrities doing lame things because we buy the stuff.  Fine, I guess Angelina is a pretty good actress, and I like some of her movies, but do I need to see pictures every time her and Brad take the kids to the beach?  No.

Is the paparazzi to blame for some of the celebrity melt downs?  Sure, maybe not entirely, but they need to hold some of the blame.

Who is to say Diana would not be alive today if....  well, you can fill in the blank here.

Point for LC.  I cannot disagree.  But I still don't like the stalkerazzi.

Fame and fortune is like anything else in life it has a price.

The price is freedom, if you don't want to be a "victim" of the media then don't court it for profit.  Any famous person with half a brain could easily hide away from the media if they wanted to and still have a career.

The writer Thomas Pynchon for example, rarely if ever gives interviews and refuses to have his picture taken, result ?, he can walk around in broad daylight without being pestered.
