i don't know if any of you have received this email yet, but i thought it was rather amazing.

Here SHE is, the USS New York, made from the  World  Trade  Center!

USS New York

It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the  World  Trade  Center .

It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions th at include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.

Steel from the  World  Trade  Center was melted down in a foundry in  Amite , LA to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept 9, 2003, 'those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence,' recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. 'It was a spiritual moment for everybody there.'

Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the 'hair on my neck stood up.' 'It had a big meaning to it for all of us,' he said. 'They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back.'

The ship's motto? 'Never Forget'

Excellent thread, thank you. I love the re-use of the same steel the terrorists knocked down, using it as a weapon against terrorism in part. Love it.

It's an awesome idea!!  What a wonderful tribute to the victims, and for their family members.  I have to say, though I love the idea and what it stands for, I sure think they could have built a better looking ship!

She's more of a stealth ship.

Gone are the big tall masts and boxy squared off shapes of the past.

They reflect radar like crazy, and allow  a ship to be seen and sunk from many miles away.

The new slanted sides, simpler lines with less equipment visible accomplish several things-

Radar bounces off at an angle, not returning to where it came from (same principle as the F-117 stealth fighter)

Also, the lack of complex equipment on deck means that icing and sea handling is much better-

All that equipment mounted all over ships used to collect ice by the TON and make ship handling very scary. With smoother sides, you get less radar reflection AND less icing.

That makes sense!  Thank you for the explanation sirlamre.  I sure don't like the looks of it compared to the...........say, guided missile cruisers.  This ship to me looks like they haven't finished it!!  I still love what she stands for though.............

She's meant to carry assault troops for landings. Sure way to lose her is to think she;s a missile cruiser.

Arel;eigh Burke class AEGIS system destroyer....

The only obvious weapon is the five invh gun mount forward.

Missiles are stowed in vertical launch tubes and provide no mounts to be seen by eye or radar.

Scott
