Both President Bush and NC Governor Mike Easley (and others) all said
"Prices should rise no more than about .20 cents"

http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/09/13/bush.ike/index.html

They have said this as late as today (ie, they didn't say this long before it went up)

However -- it would seem that _across_ the country, prices have gone up MUCH more than .20 cents.

On late Thursday, prices in WNC had already risen the .20 cents --- BEFORE Bush/ etc made such statements.

During the day on Friday, prices soared well beyond that -- at a minimum, up by 60 cents, and in the stations closer to the Interstate (which are always gouging tourists who don't know the local average) - they went up more than 1.00

So --

I wanna know when the WHOLESALE indictment of gas suppliers is going to begin on charges of gouging.

If 20 cents was the stated increase by not one, but SEVERAL politicians and national administration officials as the "expected" rise ---  I'd have considered 40, and perhaps even 50.

So I want  to see them NAIL all the folks that raised their prices anything over DOUBLE what the government said should happen.

Yeah, good luck with that. As long as big business has a stranglehold on our political whores there won't be big punishments for this. Or at least, I'd be shocked if there were.

You got that right.

When corporations and industrial lobbying organizations are allowed to make HUGE campaign donations
several things happen:

1. the "campaign industry" ensures that their prices for supporting campaigns reflect the fact that corporate money is available
2. this ensures that corporations are still NEEDED, since many candidates cannot do without their money
3. which means that the politicians owe far far far more allegiance to corporations than they do to Joe Citizen.

which ends up meaning that those large corporate donors are "above the law" so far as their minion politicians are concerned --- those politicians don't want to shoot the golden goose that pays for their campaigns.

What irritates me is the fact that companies started raising gas prices before the hurricaines even hit, because maybe they would cause damage.  Well, Ike made it through the gulf, with not as much damage as predicted, and I would bet we won't see the prices go down any time soon.

I support that.

However, I KNOW that the energy companies ARE NOT going to lower prices even if they drilled enough holes to give us all gas for FREE.

Those $$$ bastards are going to do things like pay $100 million for a refinery to be built, but "pass along" the costs to the tune of something like $300 million to the consumer.

I wouldn't hold my breath about "drilling locally" reducing our prices any.

All that means is more $$$ profit $$$ for them, since it won't actually cost as much.

When hell freezes over, I'll expect to see stockholders shorted on profits, so that consumers can actually SAVE on something.

If they drill, we'll be paying for the drilling 10 years past when it actually is paid for.

They call that profitability.

When and if they do drill more here, then after about 5 years, you can expect gas prices to drop about .05 cents due to drilling savings. Expect politicians and corporate spokesidiots to try to tell us that we're saving $1.00 a gallon or more. Oddly, you WON"T see prices go down, they just 'won't go up as much' --- or some smily-faced BS like that from behind a microphone.

Meaning, we'll never have any direct PROOF of whether we're actually GETTING savings.

We will just have to take their "word" for the fact that we're getting savings.

A lot of the reason gas is so high is speculation.....Drilling or even the THREAT of drilling will drive the prices down.....That's economics 101

You don't really believe that do you? The recent Gas price  jump came at the same time as oil was falling.  Refinery damage, real or expected was the cause, not oil! As far as more drilling here, OPEC will just cut back until the price is where they want it! Who thought gas was going to be under $3.00 after Summer, it sure wasn't me!

Other conditions..hurricanes for one thing, were the cause in that..again..speculation that the flow of oil would be impacted...drove the price of gas up

For a guy that has wallstreet in his avatar, you sure don't know much about speculation in the market....Threaten to drill, show we ARE going to do it, and not bluff...you'll see gas drop as the speculators get out of the market...

Do you still not get that?

Gas and oil prices will fluctuate in the short term, the only way to fix this is to become less dependant on oil in the long term. Oil is on it's way out but nobody likes to look 10-20 years ahead. It does nothing immediately to to any politicians bottom line and people want to live in a fast-food world, everyone wants instant gratification. as Charlie Brown said "We're Doomed".

Heh. Speculators won't leave the market. they KNOW that the corporations are going to "pass along" the costs to the consumer, at about a 25% markup over what the real cost was.

The corporations make more money when the speculators are 'a speculatin' --

they're deeply in bed with each other --- and not the consumer.

it's no different than the other lies I'm hearing about how the "mountainous terrain" is why gas isn't available in WNC.  Excuse me, but they HAVE been delivering gas up here (along TWO major interstates, we aren't dirt roads) --- for decades.

So now we don't have ANY gas at most stations, and it's "because the mountainous terrain makes it harder to deliver"

We didn't run out of gas when the ICE storms hit for a week on end. The trucks still got through. Now, it's bright and sunny and 75 degrees, and the hills are a problem for the trucks. BULLSHIT!

Same kind of marketing lies ---

If God Himself drilled the holes, built refineries and HANDED it all to the oil companies, we'd STILL "eat up" any potential savings in "cost of operations" before it got passed along to the consumers.

And the speculators know that, so they aren't going to rush madly away from oil --- they know that profitability will be made to "remain high" == no fears for them actually losing anything.
