I learned a great lesson long long ago that I'd like to share in case some of you haven't.  The purpose of this post is to help save you time and aggravation in the future.

Flash back to maybe around 15 years ago when I was in the film/video industry editing a promotional piece for Panasonic.  Typical of an edit room on bigger budget material, there were 3-5 Panasonic clients sitting behind me breathing down my neck watching every move.  This was common, especially when ad agency guys were involved.  They can neurotically bark at you to tweak the space between letters in a single word for a half hour.  That was fine, I was built for that.  I was always booked and always got top dollar because I had talent and just as important, I had endless patience and held up just fine through the night if we had to go late, which was always.  So, I'm getting paid around $100 an hour, and they are paying many hundreds of dollars per hour to rent the edit room.  The point?  Time was big money and making dumb mistakes or not doing what you can to save them time was a big no no.

I was working on a transition within the video.  I got a little lucky, and sort of "freehand" style got it down after about 15 minutes of work.  Right after that, the computer froze.  Upon reboot, the last saved copy of the work was before that transition I had made.  They loved it, so I had to recreate it.  Once these people love something they have to have it so no matter what I had to do the same exact thing, somehow.  It took me almost two hours to recreate the exact thing I did due to the somewhat lucky freehand stroke I got while creating it the first time.  NO ONE was happy about that.  What was my lesson?  Even though the system did automated backups every half hour, that wasn't good enough.  Save my work A LOT more often.  Especially when all it took was a fast CNTL +S key board stroke to save to file.

From that day forward, I hit CTRL S every few minutes and/or after every thing I did that I liked for that moment and did not want to lose.

Computers can lock, websites can lock, power surges can come, an application or software can fail - you can lose your computer-related work at any time.

When you are writing an email, making a post on a site, filling out a website form, or working on any file on your computer, graphic or text, save often.  Normally, all it takes is a CTRL S.

On something like a post, the fastest way I know how is to CTRL A to highlight all the content then CNTL C to copy it.  Now, at least, it is in your computer's buffer should something happen.  You could always paste it back if needed (CTRL V).

What I often do is keep a notepad file open and paste into that, so I can CTRL S and save it to my hard drive.

During the writing of this post, I did that.  Several times I CTRL A, CNTL C, and then CNTRL V into notepad, then CNTL S to save it.  It takes me two seconds.  If you want to get fancy, after you've copied (CTRL C) the material you want to save, you can go to your notepad and CNTL A that so it is all highlighted, then while highlighted, CNTL V - it will replace the older material in your notepad with your latest copied material.

Just CTRL A and CTRL C will save your butt most of the time because normally you can paste the material back if you lose it somehow.  It's worth the 1 second it takes.

So, before you hit SEND, NEXT, CONTINUE, etc. on a post, email, or form you are filling out, save your work or at least copy it into your buffer.

If you are writing something long in an email, post, letter, or file, save it every few minutes so you never lose more than a few minutes of time.  If you write something particularly good, save it right after that sentence.  There is no reason to lose 15 minutes typing something out because of a computer, software, or internet bug, freeze, or problem.

That's my tip for the year.
