http://www.sacbee.com/101/story/1289626.html snip: Ten years after the casino cash started flowing, the Rumsey Band of Wintun Indians' good fortune is on display across the peaceful Capay Valley. Thanks to their Cache Creek Casino Resort – which makes about $300 million a year and is scheduled to expand – each of the 26 adults in the 60-member nation gets about $1 million a year after taxes, more if they're on the tribal council or committees. They get a travel allowance to expand their horizons to Tahiti, Europe or anyplace they desire. They own luxury cars, custom homes on the rancheria and second homes elsewhere. They send their children to a first-class private school that offers their Patwin language and native flute taught occasionally by Grammy winner Mary Youngblood. and further: Only three tribal members have finished high school since the casino money started rolling in. They know they'll never have to work as long as they stay out of jail. Pore injuns.

I'm not sure what your point is. The children are being sent to 'first-class private schools' and taught their native language and customs, yet you're trying to focus on their lack of education. It's a small tribe, there might've only been three people that were the right age to graduate from high school, which makes the point rather moot, wouldn't you say?

You realize we've got some Native Americans in here as members, right? And that they could easily rip you a new asshole? I hope to see that happen.

Good for them! I would like to see more of this. It established the Rumsey Rancheria in 1907 on a hard slice of Capay Valley miles from the tribe's original villages. For decades the tribe lived in shacks and had to haul water two miles from a pump in Rumsey. When the Rumsey School said it didn't want Indians in 1912, the Bureau of Indian Affairs opened a school in Guinda to teach Indian children how to become domestic help. The tribe's reversal of fortune began in 1985 when it opened one of the first Indian bingo halls in California. Congress legalized Indian casinos in 1988, and in 1989 tribal members got their first monthly dividends from bingo revenue. Under Paula Lorenzo, who became chief in 1993, the tribe became an economic and political powerhouse. A one-time welfare mom, Lorenzo raised three children with the earnings she made picking fruit and washing dishes. As chief, she led the tribe in the creation of the casino resort, custom homes and private K-12 school.

First of all they are First Nation people....because they were here before we were. We took their land away, then gave them shit to live on. Once they find anything worth while on this shit land, we try to take it back. Sooooo....their casinos are a way of making money that we actually can't take back. Now Squarebob, my granddaughter is Cherokee, and Blackfoot. I personally would much rather see them making money, than taking from our welfare system. I would also much rather see them take something rather then an illegal who came here and wasn't here to begin with, take ANYTHING! Where I guess I could see a point in your favor is, we won the war so why give anything period! Well, we've won lots of wars and we still give til there's no more to give already. I would rather give to the First Nation, than others around the world.......... I use to think like you n this, until I started listening to a lot of very old and wise First Nation people talk. Now, I look at it differently.

I think you need high school, then. This is typical of this poster. To put meager effort into making any point while trying - and failing - to appear clever and cryptic. Normally I don't read this person, but with the title of the thread being so blatantly racist I opened the thread. I see no point, except for the one on top of his head. I find it very telling that the poster's focus is on the negative aspects of the article and conveniently ignores the positive aspects. As a Native myself, I believe the people are owed the opportunity to make money through the casinos and any other way they can. Lord knows white people caused them enough grief. It's time they got something back. What they choose to do with their money is their business. Some people gamble and lose money in the stock market and blame others. Some on the other hand use adversity as a tool to overcome the bad hand they were dealt. If I had a choice on who is morally more correct I would go with the Indians. I cannot feel any remorse for self-inflicted greed.

Let's see here; They are living in nice homes, paid for I might add. They are able to send their children to the best of private schools, where they will get a hell of a lot better education than they would in the public system, And many more benefits of their endeavors. Seem to me they're a lot smarter than you are white man! You appear to have a problem with native people of this country. Could it be a touch of jealousy we're seeing here? Allow me to fill you in on a little history spongepants. My Great Grandfather was an infant of 1 year when his mother carried him on the Trail of Tears. They were settled on the reservation in what is now Oklahoma, where some years later my Grandfather was born. He left the reservation at the age of 19 with only a 4th grade education and went to Indiana seeking work. Well he not only found work, he made enough money to raise 7 children, and put them all through college. He also served a term as the President of the United Clay Workers Union. He was able to do this because he was willing to get off his ass and work for it, unlike a few people I've known. From your comments, I take it you would rather see the red man kept on the reservation, kept poor, and fed shit by our lying government. People like you are the very reason this country is falling apart at the seams at this time. Instead of getting out and working, even if you have to claw your way to the top, you set around complaining because others have made it there. Remember this; The white man took EVERYTHING from the native peoples of this country at one time. We are a patient people though and we learn well. The payback is only just now beginning, and you haven't seen anything yet. Oh, and check your spelling dummy. You can't even spell 'Poor'

Squarebob Spongepants, you Sir, are a racist pig...It is your own words that have left me with that impression...You are a perfect example of how most parents raise their children not to be...For you to begrudge these people anything is dispicable.

Ooooooh, major pantie bunching. I didn't know that the Indians have been prevented from working at jobs and owning businesses before casinos came along. My error. I can understand the responses and support from those who consider "staying out of jail" one of the major goals in life.

You don't care that people see your garbage and consider you a dim, racist, uneducated, attention-seeking moron, you just want to bunch up someone's panties. You are nothing. You are a snotty little brat threatening to hold your breath till you turn blue and stomping your feet. You are beneath notice. You are a joke.

What I've always found absoLUTELY hilarious is that the Indians are making MONEY off of OUR GREED! If we white people (and Indians or blacks almost -never- gamble, percentagewise) were less GREEDY, and didn't WANT to blow our money and get drunk in expensive hotels, and actually SAVED our money instead of blowing it gambling.. .. the Indians would not be so rich. Only reason they're able to do as much with gambling as they do is because WE"RE THAT STUPID!!! I've long felt that it'd be cheaper to go set fire to a $100 bill in my driveway than to go to an Indian reservation gambling house and _maybe_ (only slightly maybe) get the $100 back.
