Snowstorm Aims for Omaha, Indianapolis to New York City, Washington, D.C.
2/3/2010 3:30 PM
The mass of rain gathering over Texas is heading to the north and east, where most of the storm will fall in the form of heavy snow during the second half of the week into the first part of the weekend.Have the snow shovels and the plows ready, as people from the Plains to the Midwest and the mid-Atlantic are the targets of this new big, bad boy.The storm will hit the High Plains first through Thursday with moderate snow. From Thursday night into Friday, the snow will roll into the Ohio Valley. Friday into Saturday, snow will spread into the southern Great Lakes, the central Appalachians, the mid-Atlantic, and the Interstate-95 corridor.Schools will close, plans will be foiled, and flights will be canceled. Some roads could close from the Virginias to Maryland, Delaware, northwestern North Carolina, southern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey. Motorists should be prepared for a slow go due to snow, slush, and icy spots.Recall that much of this area was slammed by the Christmas week blizzard. However, other areas and cities will join in on the disruptions as well, from Omaha, Des Moines, Kansas City and St. Louis to Indianapolis, Dayton and Pittsburgh.Once again, areas from Roanoke to Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York City will be in the heart of the storm. These locations have already received two to four times their normal snowfall so far this winter. While the storm will start off with wet snow, it will transform to a blizzard as winds increase, drawing cold air farther and farther south. A freeze-up and blowing and drifting will become a problem for the second half of the storm as a result.

Major Nor'easter to Slam Mid-Atlantic
 Feb 4, 2010 11:45 am ET
**Thursday PM Update**: Blizzard warnings have been issued for south Jersey and Delaware.

Let's get right to it.

What? A major nor'easter will strike the Mid-Atlantic states producing major snow accumulations and strong winds.

When? Storm begins around midday Friday and lasts through the majority of Saturday.

Where? High-populated areas of Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey and southeastern Pennsylvania will likely all experience big snow totals.  Washington, DC and Baltimore could experience foot plus snow totals.

How much snow?  I'll let the map do the talking.  This map takes us out to 48 hours.  This map will update automatically with new forecast totals as the event approaches in time and as forecasts are tweaked.

Northeast I-95 Corridor U.S. 48-Hour Rain/Snow Forecast
(click map for slideshow collection of storm-related maps)

What else should we know?  Don't forget about the winds.  High, perhaps damaging winds, will howl across south Jersey, all of Delaware and eastern Virginia and Maryland as the snow falls.

Wind gusts over 40 or even 50 mph are possible especially right along the coast.

There is some potential that blizzard criteria will be met at times.

Blizzard warnings have been issued for parts of south Jersey and the state of Delaware.

Winds will also be gusty around southeastern Pennsylvania, Manhattan, Long Island and coastal southern New England.

During Sunday (especially the morning hours), wind chills throughout the Northeast and parts of the Mid-Atlantic will be brutal - largely in the single digits and teens.  Some areas may dip below zero especially interior sections of the Northeast.

Virginia and metro DC area have declared emergency status. could be up to 28 inches of snow. it's an historical storm, i grew up there, this is not typical, the people not accustomed to it. my sister and brother live there (Maryland), i'll be staying in touch with them as long as possible. ::worried::

It has been raining here since yesterday, and is supposed to get worse before tomorrow. The creeks are already up high, and I look for a lot of flooding. Glad this isn't snow.
