I like history, but that is pretty obscure.  I'd bet that it was a stripper.  The stripper pole is a safety feature.

One of my stripper friends had it as a life goal to one day open up a "classy" strip club and really "do it right."  Having a pole was specifically mentioned ::sillyhappy::
