Thank you for reading about POTDbeta

Introducing the Posts Of The Day (POTD) beta launch, a unique user-based rating system and method of recognizing good posts and experiencing the content of forum websites.  I invented it so at least pretend you like it for a little while.  :P

#1) It's a different way for someone to screen/view/enjoy a site as they can see just the posts that have received votes.

#2) It's another way, over time, to acknowledge good contributors via the MyPOTD meter in posts and profiles, and to encourage good posting.

It's all about offering people a different way (another option) to check out posts on a site.  People can go check out the posts that members have felt were worth voting on for one reason or the other.  The MyPOTD meter just indicates that person's level of winning posts.  In their profile, at the bottom, you can go read those past winning posts if you wish by clicking on the links.

So think of it as another way to view the site, just like the Recent tab is one way, and think of it as a profile/user info expansion, similar in a sense to some rating systems other sites have for members.

PART ONE: the new voting feature, or post rating system, for forum sites like this one

PART TWO: not yet announced, but will be soon

So, it's a way for good posts and contributors to get credit, and offers a convenient, meaningful way to experience a site's content.  There are many creative possibilities for using the system.  There are many ways to get other uses out of it.  One of them will be featured as the PART TWO of this POTD unveiling.  Heh heh heh.

Let's get to the good stuff.

Members vote ---> Top rated posts win ---> Authors get credit, posts get permanent trophies.

Members vote

Members vote on the posts they wish to support as a POTD candidate by clicking the Vote button that displays in posts.  You control, in your Admin panel, whether private, public, or all forums participate.  The default does not put vote buttons in private forums to avoid private posts from getting exposed.

Click the Vote button, one point will be added to that post's rating.  See the "voters:" part?  That shows you how many people have voted for that post that day, so far.

You will see an animated checkmark in any post that receives at least one vote to indicate that the post has been voted upon and is showing in the POTD area. The checkmark lasts just for the day and goes away when the new day resets.  It is intended to communicate the system, recognize posts, and encourage participation.

Voting is anonymous - no one knows how you voted.  Although, I will have access to the data should I need to check for abuse.

Top rated posts win

The Posts Of The Day section is readily accessible by clicking the POTD button at the top right of the site:

There, the posts that received any voting at all, show up.  They are sortable by clicking the top of each column.  You can click the "Click HERE for yesterday's winners" link to see which posts won (became Posts Of The Day).

The top 10% rated posts become Posts Of The Day.  However, the system is currently set to award at least 3 POTDs each day if it can.  You can not vote on your own post.

An author can only win one POTD for the day max.  The system will ignore their other voted upon posts when deciding the other winners, if any.

If posts have the same Rating, it chooses randomly between those for a winner.

The system is currently set to allow each Member a total of 3 votes daily.

Authors get credit, posts get permanent trophies.

If your post wins, a few things happen.  It gets listed at the bottom of your profile, clickable for people to read.  Also in your profile, your MyPOTD meter benefits and the amount of POTDs you have is indicated next to the meter, to the right:

In addition, the posts that won for you are displayed and linked below the meter.

The MyPOTD meter works on a bell curve from the pool of other POTD winners.  I expect it to get more accurate over time as more people accumulate points.  It is set to reflect your amount of POTD awards compared to other POTD award holders.

Tech speak: it sorts all the members by the # of POTD they got and each time a member has more POTD than the last member, the counter increases.  To make the bar, it calculates the value of the counter when it was looking at that member / the final value of the counter.

Your MyPOTD also shows up in your posts, under your avatar, at the bottom:

Winning posts will be forever stamped, in the upper right hand corner of the post, next to the Vote button, with a permanent, POTD graphic trophy:

Authors can only win points (for their profile and MyPOTD meter) for a specific post ONCE.  So, if the same post that already won a POTD credit wins on another day, it can win and be shown with the winners, but the author will not get points or MyPOTD meter benefits from it.  In other words, an author can only benefit, point wise, once from a given post.

This is being tested, that is why it is in beta.  That means changes can happen at any time.  You may also see weird, but temporary, code junk appearing and disappearing.

This modification may become a part of ClassicNancy's WowClassic forum software, or at least, a mod available through Classic.  FINALLY, a woman who likes me for my brain.  Anyway, as of now, it comes with admin panel controls that allow you to set the parameters on a few things:

# of daily votes allowed per member
% of voted posts that win a POTD daily
Min. number of voted posts that win a POTD daily

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to your feedback.  Feel free to post in this thread.

- Frank

p.s. tweaking the system to prevent abuse will always be ongoing, but abusing or manipulating the system somehow is a very serious rule-breaking event and will not be tolerated at all.  That includes working to manipulate the system by trying to get others vote a certain way.

Is the voting anonymous?

it's going to be really interesting to see how this shakes down.

so if i understand this correctly, i can vote for a particularly good post, but if someone gave that person a negative vote, it supersedes the good vote and they can't get POTD?

100 people can vote -1, but if 101 people voted +1, then the net is a positive number so that post can possibly be a winner.  The fact that a post received a negative vote doesn't automatically disqualify it.  It just takes a point off the rating.  The end NET result, or number, has to be positive for a post to qualify.

-1 -1 +1 +1 +1 +1

Those votes add up to a +2.  That would be that post's rating.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up worn out screaming what a ride..

Initial post updated to add:

Authors can only win points (for their profile and MyPOTD meter) for a specific post ONCE.  So, if the same post that already won a POTD credit wins on another day, it can win and be shown with the winners, but the author will not get points or MyPOTD meter benefits from it.  In other words, an author can only benefit, point wise, once from a given post.
