OK, a comment by Foxglovepress in a certain other thread in this forum prompts this thread.  Are there any movies from the present or past that really scared the bejeebers out of you?  What about the movie frightened you, and do you think it was fright beyond what the producers originally intended?

From the past, I was really messed up by the Exorcist.  Was having bad dreams for a long time after that..had one where I was being chased down a long hallway by two guys yelling "The Power of Christ compells you." over and over again.  I make it through a door to find myself in a church..a place I had not visited all that much.

Also, more recently, the movie Stir of Echoes with Kevin Bacon made me nuts, too.  We were watching it on HBO or something, and I was frightened beyond belief.  I even started yelling at my husband afterward for "making" me watch it.  I am not exactly sure what about the movie scared me so, but Rick jokes with me still about it.  He will say things like "Hey..you're favorite movie is on..want to watch it?"

YEP!  Alfred Hitchcock"s  Psycho!  I've always had a terrible fear of a knife.  I'm not afraid of being shot...........but the thought of a knife will send me to the corner of a closet!  The shower scene scared me so much, that I truly couldn't take a shower for over a year!  Baths only!!!!     :rotfl:

I do not know if this is just an urban legend, but I heard that Janet Leigh (or was it Tippi Hendren) never took another shower after Psycho.  Just baths.

everything used to scare me.  not so much anymore...i guess i've been desensitized.

i even had nightmares from an episode of "Hawaii 5-0"  ::LOL:: (when i was a kid)

but i agree LC...when i first saw "Jaws" in the theater...we were sitting in the very back row...and i didn't even realize that i had stood up on my seat and was inching my way up the wall  (literally climbing the walls) ...my friend had to bring me back to reality.  ::rotfl::

UTR "Halloween" freaked me out as well.

my husband loves horror flicks...i would rather watch anything else...but they don't scare me like they use to...i take them all with a grain of salt.  Not that I don't jump when something happens...but none of them give me nightmares anymore.

the reason JAWS frightened me was not just the skillful way the movie was done, i lived near martha's vineyard when they were filming it there, and i knew it was a big rubber shark on a sled. what frightened me was the fact that i was/am in the ocean all the time and i knew it ( the book) was based on 5 fatal attacks that had happened on the jersey shore in 1916. it took me a long time to go as deep offshore as i used to do.

There have been a few movies that made my jump, but the only movie I can remember that really scared me was Dawn of the Dead. Flesh-eating zombies are scary. The night I saw it, I had to keep looking under the bed to make sure there weren't any zombies there.

This is going to sound weird, but the scene that's always frightened me the most is that one from "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" where the woman is pushed down the stairs.  That's a HUGE fear with me!

::shock::

That whole movie has a rather "ma-cob" kind of feeling.  Her eyes are enough to send chills down your back!

"The Birds" Hitchcock movie

"Physco" Hitchcock again.

"Jaws" made me think twice about surfing for a summer.

"Rosemary’s Baby’ (1968)" Polanski movie.

"The Silence of the Lambs’ (1991)" scared the you know what out of me.

"The Exorcist’ (1973)" The spinning head, spewing did me in.

‘The Shining’ (1980)" Stanley Kubrick doesn’t disappoint.

‘Dawn of the Dead’ (1978) featuring some of the goriest scenes ever committed to film.::shock::

'Alien' (1979) The first one was the best and scared me to death watched most of if from behind the couch. :lmao:

'The Thing' (1982) the guy’s head sprouting insect legs to escape doesn’t give you nightmares then I don't know what will.::shock::

That my list of movie that I will never forget for the fear they set in me. ::shock::

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up worn out screaming what a ride..

Tippi Hendren was in the Birds.  That movie disturbed me quite a bit.  Especially the scenes in the playground and the birthday party.

When I was really little I wasn't allowed to watch scary movies but I remember that the T.V. comercials for Salem's Lot kept me awake quite a few nights.  That vampire make-up was scary!
