Here's one more song from Army of Lovers' Disco Extravaganza. It's called "Ride the Bullet." This version was released in 1990.

"Ride the Bullet" was also included on Massive Luxury Overdose. In 1991, Michaela replaced La Camilla. The next year, Army of Lovers made a new version of the "Ride the Bullet" video apparently making fun of La Camilla's absence. (Alexander and Jean-Pierre have made some seriously catty remarks about La Camilla over the years.) This new version featured the much skimpier costumes and directly sexual content of their mature style.

This is Army of Lovers' video of "Candyman Messiah" from Massive Luxury Overdose. Michaela appears to be lipsyncing to La Camilla's vocals, but I'm not certain. It's an odd video with propmen constantly moving props on and off blocking the view and Gunnar the dog not sitting still.

Here are a pair of videos of a song called "Obsession" for contrast. First is the original version from Army of Lovers' Massive Luxury Overdose. It's scoring is almost orchestral, and Alexander looks terrified as Michaela and Jean-Pierre torment him.

Bodies Without Organs included a cover of "Obsession" on their first album Prototype thirteen years later. Martin Rolinski deadens his voice somewhat for this number, but it remains much more plaintive than Alexander's earlier interpretation. The scoring is all electronic making this version more danceable. This clip is a performance on Swedish television.

Army of Lovers' Massive Luxury Overdose ends with "Judgment Day." It is a fierce dirge like "Crucifed" and later "Israelism." In my opinion it is even more ferocious and surrealistic than those songs, at once parody and indictment. Here we have Michaela stabbing a stuffed animal, Jean-Pierre shouting the Shema, and Alexander giving birth! This bizarre video was dedicated to the dog Gunnar.

Dominika joined Army of Lovers with their third album The Gods of Heaven and Earth. Here is the video of "I Am" from that album. It was recorded from Swedish TV.

I ran across some information about why Army of Lovers got virtually no attention in the U.S. after 1993. They were banned from airplay by MTV because MTV thought that the video for "Israelism" could be interpreted as anti-Semitic. The band was so insulted by this that they called a press conference to explain the video. Alexander said that it was a celebration of Jewish culture intended to tweak the holocaust denyers who had become quite vocal in Europe. He also noted that Jean-Pierre, who sings the lead on that song, is Jewish. "Israelism" was the first video released promoting their third album, The Gods of Earth and Heaven. Since MTV was about the only place music videos were played in the U.S. at that time, the album got little extended attention. That's a shame because there are some songs that have real potential as singles on it. In addition to "Israelism," I think "La Plage de Saint Tropez" could have been as big a hit as "Crucified" if it had been on the MTV playlist.

Meanwhile back in Sweden, Army of Lovers was facing criticism for not playing concerts. All there records were studio recordings. Some were saying they didn't have the skill to perform live. So they recorded a really strange number called "Sons of Lucy" in one take in the studio. The footage used for the video was taken entirely from that session. The song was included on The Gods of Earth and Heaven. ("Lucy" is the prehuman fossil that had recently been discovered in Africa.)

This video of Army of Lovers' "The Grand Fatigue" from The Gods of Earth and Heaven uses the same set and costumes that that they used for "La Plage de Saint Tropez." This is unusual because all the other videos had different costumes. The lyrics may are difficult to make out, but the song is about the misgivings of being on a diet. Listen for all the different kinds of food Micheala mentions in her recitatives--everything from Camembert cheese to Schwarzwald cake.

Army of Lovers' costumes were designed by Camilla Thulin who can be seen stretched across the piano in the video of "When the Night Is Cold." Camilla Henemark (La Camilla), Michaela Dornonville de la Cour, and Dominika Peczynski worked as models for Camilla Thulin. Thus they knew one another before and outside their becoming part of Army of Lovers.

In 1994, Army of Lovers released there fourth and last major album Glory, Glamour, and Gold. "Lit de parade" was their first single from that album. The title is an archaic term meaning both the honeymoon bed and the bed used to display a corpse before burial. The video alludes to both meanings.

Oh, I'm sure they would. I remember "Crucified" being played all the time at the gay disco I frequented back in the early 1990s. The sexual ambiguity and artificiality that Army of Lovers projected was a carefully crafted political statement with indulgence as the watchword and partying as political action. If there was any doubt about this, "Sexual Revolution" from Glory, Glamour and Gold should lay that to rest.

Freedom from sexual restraints was a part of Alexander Bard's agenda from the very beginning. He claims to have spent the early 1980s working as a prostitute in Amsterdam. He performed in drag during the band's first phase as Barbie. He identifies as bisexual, and he was having a long term affair with Dominika during the mid 1990s.

Jean-Pierre Barda was a cosmetologist who performed in gay cabarets before joining Barbie. He continued his work as a cosmetologist and hair stylist throughout his association with Army of Lovers and beyond. He was even employed by the Swedish royal family.

As I mentioned before, La Camilla, Michaela, and Dominika were fashion models employed by Camilla Thulin. Dominika hosted the Swedish version of Temptation Island and the British television show Dominika's Planet. She also appeared in Playboy magazine in 1998.

In fact, Michaela explained that her reason for leaving Army of Lovers after Glory, Glamour and Gold was that Alexander and Dominika were not good role models for her daughter. In her opinion, Army of Lovers was not a good place for her to raise her child.

Alexander's explanation was that he and Michaela had artistic differences. She wanted to soften Army of Lovers' edginess (presumably with ballads or something). When he and the others refused, Michaela left and La Camilla returned.

BWO has a new video. A new BWO video is always exciting, and this one is especially appreciated. Beefcake aside, it includes Alexander in a walrus suit and applying gorilla hair to Martin. "Give Me the Night" is on Fabricator.

(Correction: I listed the wrong album for the BWO cover of "Obsession" earlier in this thread. It can be found on Halcyon Days.)

While La Camilla was away from Army of Lovers, she attempted an acting and solo music career. Her success was very limitted. Of the solo singles she released, only "Every Time You Lie" was adopted by Army of Lovers when she returned. It can be found on Army of Lovers' Les Greatest Hits.

Les Greatest Hits was a compilation album with only a few songs that had not previously appeared on Army of Lovers albums.

One of the new songs on Army of Lovers' Les Greatest Hits was "Give My Life." It was the first video after Michaela's departure and La Camilla's return to the group. The video opens with Jean-Pierre, Dominika, and Alexander working on a car in a garage. Then the song breaks out as they descend into an underground maze where their workclothes are transformed into some of the skimpiest, sexiest, most outrageous costumes we have seen yet. There La Camilla in full regalia pursues them. The song is as upbeat and hopeful as any Army of Lovers performed. Take a look.

"King Midas" was the last single that Army of Lovers released before Alexander Bard left the group to begin developing Vacuum. The contemporary costumes and nightclub setting set it apart from other Army of Lovers videos. It can be found on Les Greatest Hits.

In 1996, Alexander Bard and co-writer Anders Wollbeck left Army of Lovers to form a new group called Vacuum which included Mattias Lindblom (vocals) and Marina Schiptjenko (synthesizer). Vacuum produced classically influenced music with ernest lyrics. "I Breathe" was released as a single in 1996. It was followed by "Science of the Sacred" and "Pride in My Religion" the next year. All three were included on their first album The Plutonium Cathedral.

In 1998, Vacuum released their second album Seance at the Chaebol. That album included the singles "Tonnes of Attraction" and "Let the Mountain Come to Me." Here is the video for "Let the Mountain Come to Me." (The other singles can be seen earlier in this thread.)
