When Alexander Bard is not busy writing postmodernist philosophy, he is producing and performing music. He started out with a synth-punk fusion project called Baard, but I have found no videos of Baard. His second project was Barbie. This is the only Barbie video I have found. Here you will see Alexander with La Camilla and Jean-Pierre Barda performing "Barbie Goes Around the World."

Soon Alexander, La Camilla, and Jean-Pierre abandoned Barbie and began Army of Lovers. Here they are performing their most popular number, "Crucified," from Massive Luxury Overdose.

When Army of Lovers disbanded, Alexander (along with writing partner Anders Wolbeck) teamed up with Mattias Lindblom and Marina Schiptjenko to perform as Vacuum. Here they are performing "Science of the Sacred" from The Plutonium Cathedral.

After a few years Alexander and Marina left Vacuum and eventually formed a new group with Martin Rolinski called Bodies Without Organs. Because their fans have trouble pronouncing the band's name, it usually is abbreviated BWO. Here is "Sunshine in the Rain" from Prototype.

I chose the last three examples because they all use more or less explicit religious imagery. Army of Lovers used crucifixion as a motif to satirize self-indulgent suffering. Vacuum treated its religious theme more seriously and mystically. BWO used crucifixion as a metaphor for failing love. The clips also show the distinct style of each project.

If anyone has favorite songs from these bands, please share them and tell us a little about them.

Here is another song from Vacuum--"Pride in My Religion" from The Plutonium Cathedral. You may have to turn up your speakers a little on this one. It may be too soft, but I love the video.

Mattias's eery smile turns the lyrics on their head making this an ironic jab at fanaticism. I like it.

Almost nothing was beyond Army of Lovers' camp treatment. Even a song as sadly defiant as "Let the Sunshine In" from Hair! could be loosed from its moorings in the psychodelic 60s to become a presentation of seductive destructiveness. It appears on their ablum Le Grand Docu-Soap released between Alexander's time with Vacuum and his forming BWO.

Here's a neat video from BWO. It's a jaunty little dance number about dissatisfaction in a relationship. It's called "Let It Rain," and it's from their most recent album Fabricator. It's set on a cruise ship and features "Last Supper" imagery amidst floating seafood.

And just for fun (and because I think Martin is SOOO sexy in just his low-rise jeans), here's a live performance of the same song at Stockholm Pride this past August. The sound isn't as good as it is in the official video, but that's not what it's here for. ;)

Here is Army of Lovers singing "La Plage de Saint Tropez" from their album The Gods of Earth and Heaven. I think the video is very funny.

Bodies Without Organs competed at Melodifestivalen 2005 with "Gone" from Prototype. It is a sad love song with beautiful harmonies set to a danceable beat. Unfortunately, it did not make it to the finals. Nevertheless, I find the song very catchy, and I like the performance. Martin's emotional projection is endearing; Alexander does a good job of jumping up and down behind his instruments, and Marina is elegant at her electornic piano. See for yourself:

Here's an interesting video for comparison. In 1990, Army of Lovers issued "My Army of Lovers" as a single and included it on their album Disco Extravaganza. They also included it on their 1991 album Massive Luxury Overdose. It is a rewrite of "Barbie Goes Around the World" with Camilla Hennemark (aka La Camilla) singing the lead. The video redeploys all sorts of national and sexual stereotypes. It's also worth noting that the name "Army of Lovers" was taken from a documentary by Rosa von Praunheim about the gay rights movement in the United States.

I think it's about time to see what Vacuum was like in person. This video is their official video of their most popular number, "I Breathe," from their first album The Plutonium Cathedral Mattias's dimples are really cute, and the ending is very nice indeed. I guess it's sort of a cosmic, fantasy song.

Now I'll show you the band performing the same song live. It's preceeded by a driving dance song called "Tonnes of Attraction" from their second album, Seance at the Chaebol. (And at the beginning, we catch Alexander smooching with a bodybuilder. Tee hee). Here Mattias has his hair pulled back in a ponytail, and he's wearing black glasses. Marina is sporting an attractive bob.

In case you're interested in the official video of "Tonnes of Attraction," here it is, but the picture quality is not very good.

It's interesting that after Alexander and Marina left Vacuum, Mattias adopted a rougher look (kind of like Brad Pitt) and put on a little weight, but then these performances were done nearly ten years ago.

Sometimes it is hard to tell if Army of Lovers was ever completely on the level about anything. There was almost always an ironic campiness to their presentation, even of otherwise straightforward pop songs--like their very first video, "When the Night Is Cold." The song was released in 1988 before their first album, Disco Extravaganza, but the song was not included on any of their regular albums.

I think it's decent pop music, but the arch presentation featuring Alexander doing just about the dorkiest dance I've ever seen makes me think that they are sending up gloomy pop songs. I am not able to make any coherent sense of the lyrics. If anyone has a clue to their meaning, I'd love to know what you think.

Yes, that was Camilla Hennemark in the floral headdress, poofy skirt, and stilletos on guitar. I think she's terrific at portraying an agressively artificial, hypersexualized femininity. Her headgear was almost always a part of that as was her increasingly emphasized bosom.

Early Army of Lovers videos are considerably simpler than their later ones. Early Army of Lovers's style was sometimes almost minimalist as in "Baby's Got a Neutron Bomb" from Disco Extravaganza. Here La Camilla is singing the lead with Alexander and Jean-Pierre singing backups. I don't know whether the backups are in any actual language. They may be gibberish for all I know. Once again, we're treated to some seriously dorky dancing and some of the most banal lyrics Army of Lovers ever produced.

I actually prefer the pieces from their later albums, but Disco Extravaganza had some decent dance music.

If there is any doubt as to whether Army of Lovers was intending to be satirical, their self-introductions should lay all that to rest. Camilla was absent from this video and from the related video of "La Plage de Saint Tropez" (see above) because she left the group for a while. Two new members are seen here--Michaela Dornonville de la Cour and Dominika Peczynski.

Here is another song with that lineup. It is called "Israelism" and can be found on their 1993 album The Gods of Earth and Heaven. It uses a traditional Jewish song for its chorus. I sort of look at this song as a companion piece to "Crucified" (which I included in the first post on this thread).

Here's another early clip from Army of Lovers. This a is a live performance of "Supernatural" from Disco Extravaganza followed by an interview with La Camilla in Swedish. This song is a little more sultry than the other Army of Lovers songs I've shown here.

Don't worry about not being able to understand the interview. The fun part is watching the interviewer completely incapable of taking his eyes off La Camilla's chest.

BWO has a new single out this month from Fabricator. It's called "The Destiny of Love." Here is the video.
