I think you've gotta file this in the Isn't the important thing that the teacher bootlegged the movie, rather than that it's PG-13?!

There is certainly nothing in the film that should shock an 8, 9 or 10 year old thats for sure, some of the humour will be over their heads but will be more or less undetectable to a child. The fact it was a bootleg DVD should definately be more of an issue than the fact they presented it to children, this is the sort of world we are living in now where showing a PG rated film to 9 & 10 year olds is considered more of a sin than having bootleg DVD's which is handling stolen goods.

I don't know what the movie is rated. IF it's PG 13, then the teacher has no right to be showing it to children under that age. What the heck do they have ratings for anyway? As far as it being stolen............would the kids have even "known" if someone hadn't made such a big deal out of it? I think the rating of the movie should be the biggest concern, ALONG with the fact it was stolen. Ratings are there for a reason. If a teacher is crossing THAT line..............what are you teaching the children? BOTH are reasons to be held accountable for!

I understand what you're saying, but I still think the fact that she pirated the movie is a bigger deal. Here's why: Regardless of whether or not the movie was inappropriate for kids that age (and I personally agree with Ninja that some of the content may be over their heads, but not to the extent that it shocks the conscience -- we're not talking F words or porn here) it's not illegal to show a PG-13 movie to a child under 13. The movie rating system is voluntary for the theaters. They're there so that parents can know what kind of movie it is, not so that anyone under 13 seeing the movie gets put in juvenile detention. On the other hand, it is illegal to a) pirate movies, and b) to show those movies publicly (and arguably for profit, since she's doing it on school time). I think that it would have been better if the parents were notified in case they didn't want their children seeing the movie, but I don't think that should have been a firable offense. Illegal activity in the classroom is another matter, though.

The fact that the movie was illegal would definitely be of concern. My point is that BOTH should be of equal importance. The teachers can not take it upon themselves to decide what our children can see! If it's rated, that's our choice.............To fire the teacher to me, is a bit drastic. If otherwise this person is a good teacher, then a serious write up with a sever warning would have satisfied me as a parent. That could have been a good learning experience for the students as well.

construct wrote: BRIAN!!!! Technically, it wasn't "full" frontal nudity. If you recall, Bart's privates were strategically obscured behind objects he passed while on his skateboard until one shot where he goes behind a fence and everything but his (cartoon) genitals are exposed. So at no time was there "full" frontal nudity. At any rate, it's not exactly Fritz the Cat.

I never saw Fritz the Cat. I take it you don't think it would be suitable for 4th graders. Heh, heh. It is a movie I would like to see, but I haven't checked to see if it's available on video.

On the alt.tv.simpsons newsgroup, there was a lot of talk about why the movie got a PG-13 rating. There seemed to be a split of opinion. Half the people seemed to think it was the skateboarding scene, whereas the other half seemed to think it was the depiction of drug use. My money's on the skateboarding scene, though. On the show, there was an entire episode devoted to pot, whereas the skateboarding scene would've never made it into the series. There's also the scene where Homer is flipping people the bird as he's sinking down into the hole. My nephew didn't quite understand that one, but my brother explained it to him. ("Remember that thing with your finger I told you meant a bad word?") There was definitely humor there that was more geared towards adults, but I don't think it was anything that would shock the morals of an 8 year old. I don't think it would be appropriate for my 4-year old niece, though.

The film classification system in the UK is:- Uc - Particularly suitable for children U - Suitable for all PG - general viewing, but some scenes may be considered unsuitable for younger children. 12 and 12A - 12A films cannot be viewed in the cinema by under 12's unless accompanied by an adult. A dvd certificate 12 cannot be purchased or rented by anyone under 12. 15 - No one under the age of 15 can view the film in a cinema or buy or rent the dvd. 18 - No one under the age of 18 can view the film in a cinema or buy or rent the dvd. R18 - Film can only be viewed by over 18's in a specially licensed premises, or purchased from a specially licenced shop (ahem ! a licenced sex shop !). Films are never released "unrated" in the UK, films that fail to meet the criteria for a 18 certificate are released only after editing.
