Does anyone know this series of books by Jean M Auel?  There are 5 books and I am waiting for the 6th one with great anticipation.  I have read the first 4 countless times, (the 5th only came out a couple years ago; I haven't had the time to read it  more than 6 times) to the point where I have purchased at least 4 paperback copies of each book.  Just plain wore 'em out!  I own the series in hardcover now, but I'll keep those intact and keep reading the paperbacks....and replacing them as I wreck them!  Ninja gave me the idea for this thread when he mentioned in another that we all used to run around with spears hunting mammoths.

Anyway, the books are set in the ice age, during a time when what todays humans and what can only be described as "the missing link" cohabitate the Earth.  Set in Europe with grand detail about many crafts from 25,000 years ago.  Flint-knapping, leather working, hunting spears, and communities who lived together along with their healers and spiritual leaders.  The sex scenes are pretty intense, too, once you get past the first book.  The first horses to be domesticated come into the story in the 2nd book, and the first wolf to be domesticated in the 3rd.  The story touches on inventing the first needle and other modern devices, and adaptations to hunting weapons.  If you haven't read these books, I recommend them, highly.

I could rave about this series for hours, and I've been re-reading it for about 15 years.  The series, from first to as yet the last are titled:

The Clan of the Cave Bear

The Valley of Horses

The Mammoth Hunters

Plains of Passage

Shelters of Stone

Oh !

The clan of the cave bear !

I remember the film, Daryl Hannah (I have never found her attractive) a caveman film with awfully self aware pretensions that didn't work ?

I think the fiction of Jean M Auel is best suited to the page not the screen.

That movie was an utter joke and an insult to the author and the story.  And the actors.  If anyone is going by that waste of two hours of your life and avoiding the books because of it, take my word for it....the books BURY that movie.  It's like comparing a Garfield comic book to It's A Wonderful Life.

I have read Clan of the Cave Bear.  And while I am familiar with the rest of the series, I have never read them.  Maybe I will have to take them from the library when I am off from surgery.
