Ok, so I'm not up on all the latest movies.  I don't like theaters and I don't like spending money.  So most of the movies I talk about are a bit older.  Like this one!  This one interests me because of how true to life it is about hustling pool.  (The line by Forrest Whittaker; So....you think I need to lose a little weight? was priceless!)  And being a pool player, and hearing the lingo and watching what happens in the film....it just brings back great memories from my pool hall days.

I liked The Hustler, but I have to say, this return of "Fast" Eddie Felson in this movie was better than the first one.  I have actually met some of the people who played the pros at the tournament.  Steve Mizerak, Jimmy Mataya, Earl Strickland and a few others at a tournament in Ohio many years ago.

The best part of big tournaments like this is the action in the green rooms between matches.  I have seen games where the pros bet $5000 a rack in the green rooms.  That's for 9-ball. Straight pool, the stakes are even higher.

Anyone else like The Color of Money

Should this have gone in the sports forum??

I enjoyed it just like I enjoyed "The Hustler", and you're right about Whittaker's line - I cracked up at that one.

Along with Legend (Ridley Scott 1985,  possibly the greatest most vivid fairytale ever !) the colour of money is one of the few good films I can watch with Tom Cruise in a prominent role without wanting to vomit !

I fancy myself as a decent pool player (I'm actually average) and I love The colour of money.

"Weight" in pool hustler-speak, means a spot, a handicap.  If you're playing 9-ball and you tell your opponent you will give them the 8, that means instead of sinking the 9-ball to win the game, they only have to get as far as the 8 ball.  If you know how 9-ball is played, it makes more sense.  So "weight" is an advatage for the opponent, unless you're a really good hustler then it's an advantage for you.

So Whittaker intimated that he'd hustled his opponent because he convinced his opponent to give him more "weight" than what he needed to beat him, not that he is fat and needs to lose pounds.

Watched this movie again the other night.  I learned something new.  The character Grady Seasons is played by an actual, real life professional pool player named Keith McCready.  While he may be your greatest nightmare on the pool table, he is also your greatest nightmare as an actor.  Pool players can NOT act.  :hopeless:

I liked this movie too.  It had an excellent soundtrack featuring many great vocalists and guitarists:  Eric Clapton, Ry Cooder, etc.
