Care to provide some independent verification for those credentials? Maybe I should ask some of the members of the Gin Blossoms.

"Who's Who in " is nothing more than a marketing scheme. The annual membership in that book is somewhere in the high six figures. Not exactly an exclusive bunch. Its purpose is to build marketing lists, not educational goals. I was invited to join Who's Who Among American High School students...yawn.

Couldn't find anything on the "American Foundation for Excellence in Education." What, no website? Riiiiiiiiiiiight.

According to Disney's own website, there were no Teacher of the Year nominees at all in 1997.

Things that make you go "hmmmmmm......"

Saint wrote: Ninja, I wouldn't presume to try to change your mind about negative influences and children. (Especially after seeing the bashing you gave poor JBF for wanting to shelter his family from the negative aspects of Halloween.) Many things can be considered "negative influences", scaring children with made up stories about an imaginary "hell" could be considered a "negative influence". As for the hold Halloween thread, JBF started the thread I think in the belief that members would back him in his "stand" against the "evils" of Halloween, when most members derided him for his "stand" against what is in essence just a bit of fun for kids, he immediately started playing the martyr and claimed he was being "picked on". This is a public forum, you should be able to deal with the fact that people will disagree with you about certain subjects.

After all, you're an aetheist. That says it all.
Does it ? how ?, how does my lack of a belief in god effect my opinion and views on video games ?, that kind of statement could be construed as insulting but I will ignore because it is such a throwaway meaningless statement that any idiot could pluck out of the air. Maybe if I am having a debate with UTR I will just state "after all, you're a biker. That says it all", or if I am having a debate with JBF "after all, you're a Christian. That says it all"

The only way I could possibly convince you would be to take you back in time to a day early in your childhood when you still believed in the good in people and life, still believed in intangibles, the unseen, and had faith in humanity.
I still do believe in the good of people and of life and I do have faith in humanity, I don't need to believe in any god in order to believe these things.

That day is long, long past for you.
You presume you know me ?, you have proved however that you obviously don't.

But I will say this, what could possibly be wrong with trying to defend children? You labeled me a "Defender of the morals of children." Fair enough, I'll wear the title proudly.
Your ego is such that I had a feeling you would "wear that title proudly" without a hint of irony !

I saw a five-year old in the movie store the other day renting "Hostel." How can that possibly be good for kids that age?
That is clearly wrong, the staff in the movie store are legally obliged to ensure that a film of that nature does not get into the hands of someone who is not old enough to see it. That is the fault of the shop, not the makers of the film.

Well, to answer your question, yes, I am a father and grandfather and my children and grandchildren will have a normal childhood free from blood spurting massacres, pornography, and hatred. They will grow up caring, loving adults without scarred personas and twisted values polluted by violence and pornographic sex before they were ready.
I had no idea you were a father and grandfather because I don't think I have ever heard mention anything about your children or grandchildren, which is fair enough I suppose. Please highlight where I have indicated that a childhood of blood spurting massacres, pornography and hatred is acceptable ? My daughter is certainly not exposed to any of these things why would she be ?, you are using over emotive language that misses the point I was trying to make completely.  Children having access to violent video games of films is the fault of the parents, not the makers of said video games and films that is the point I was trying to make.

When they are of age, there's enough of that waiting for them in the real world, but by then, they will be ready to process it effectively. Something adults can do, but children can't.

BTW...I have hundreds upon hundreds of classroom hours, I have spent more time with most people's children than they do, since they have to work. I have dozens of hours in psychology, and specialized training in child behavior and motivation. I have spent fifteen years, including nine years of nightschool and summerschool with kids.

Trust me...I know more about child psychology than you do.
Maybe so, but trust me I know more about video games, their history and the way they have been scapegoated for all of societies ills since their earliest incarnations in the late 60's early 70's than you do. The thread is about children not having access to video games that are unsuitable for them which I agree with. what the hell has child psychology got to go with it ?

As for casting aspersions on my teaching ability, that was petty. It makes me wonder why a simple thread to inform parents of excessively violent videogames brought forth such a vitriolic reaction from you. There seems to be more here than you are saying.
If you are unable to compete with violent video games and rap CD's in terms of holding your pupils attention which is what you seem to be saying then ? I wasn't "casting aspersions" merely trying to make a point. I have been a video gamer since the early days and us gamers have had to put up with a lot of crap from the "moral majority" over the years, blaming us and our hobby for the moral decay of society, the same as Dungeons and Dragons players have been blamed for promoting satanic ritual and black magic. All unfounded, all crap, all pathetic attempts at trying to deflect the blame away from parents, teachers, poverty and society in general.  Your censorship rhetoric is pathetic, "shall we try and deal with the complex issues in society ?, NO ! lets just blame films and video games and ban them ! thats much easier !".

If it will set your mind at ease, though, here are my credentials:

Can this thread be closed now please ?

It's got all personal and arsey and crappy.

I don't want this in the forum, we have managed to avoid personal conflict so far here and I would like it to stay this way. I try and mod here as objectively as I can but if someone mentions an issue I am passionate about ?, well perhaps I overreacted ?, perhaps Saint overreacted ?, perhaps we both overreacted ?

Eitherway Frank can you close this thread ?, I don't want anymore conflict please.
