There was a comment on a different thread that "anyone who goes to an Indiana Jones movie expecting a cinematic masterpiece is going to be sorely disappointed."  I disagree, but I didn't want to hijack the "review" thread.

Disclaimer - this isn't an attack on Brian (who made the above-referenced comment) or his opinion; it's just that the comment got me thinking in a different direction.

My opinion is that the first three Indy films were indeed cinematic masterpieces.  The first and the third in particular, but the case can be made for Temple of Doom as well.   I think that Raiders of the Lost Ark in particular was definitely a gem worthy of the description.

Taking this concept a bit beyond the original comment, do you think action films can be masterpieces as well?  Brian's comment referred specifically to Indiana Jones movies, but how about the genre as a whole?  If so, what are the best ones in your opinion?

Maybe it would be considered more sci-fi than action, but I thought I, Robot was a great movie, with great effects.  Will Smith rocks in this film!

What I liked about it was that it is set just slightly into the future.  Not 300 years where you can be transported to another planet in the blink of an eye, but what....about 40 years into the future.  People still drove cars, still cooked, went shopping, etc.  The robots in this were well done, IMO.

I really liked Braveheart and consider it an action/love/political movie.

Action films can be cinematic masterpieces, I would never dismiss the whole genre as entertaining fluff and nothing more.

I offer the following exhibits:-

The adventures of Robin Hood - 1938 - Errol Flynn

The Wild Bunch - 1969

The Bourne Ultimatum - 2007

Kill Bill vol.1 - 2003

The Great escape - 1963

Aliens - 1986

Leon - 1994

The Matrix - 1999

Raiders of the lost ark - 1981

The Good, the bad and the ugly - 1969

The Seven Samurai - 1954

The Terminator - 1984

Die Hard - 1988

The General - 1927

Jaws - 1975

The Princess Bride - 1987.
