Hi, Everyone.

Did anyone see this mini-series on A&E?  I was sorely disappointed!  They took what was a terrific book and turned it into a truly godawful two-part series.  Not only did they add extraneous elements to the plot (a snot-nosed teenage son, an estranged wife), but they added extraneous elements that made no sense.

If you've read the book, do yourself a favor and watch the 1971 version of the movie, and not this reprehensible remake.

Michael Crichton should sue for defamation of character for the very fact that his name appears in this movie.

I did catch this one, Brian.  It is coming on again in about 45 minutes.  I'll watch it again to give it another chance, but I wasn't impressed with the first viewing.  I also didn't know it was a book first.  I'll have to read that one.  In many cases the book is way better than the movie, IMO.

Nope, wasn't impressed at all.  Once I've seen it again maybe I'll have more to add.

I'm watching the first one now.  (I Tivo'd it.)  It seems much truer to the book.

I haven't seen the first one, nor read the book, so I don't have a frame of reference. I thought this was pretty good, myself. I'll have to see the other to compare.

I got finished watching the first one a little while ago.  I was very impressed with it.  The 1971 version basically took it in an entirely different direction than the modern version.  In the 1971 original, there seemed to be a lot more emphasis on the science.  The modern version almost disregards the science end of the story, in favor of a lot more human interest stuff.

The book was one of the first (if not the very first) science fiction novels I ever read.  It's written in a "War of the Worlds" kind of style, where you could almost bring yourself to believe it was non-fiction.  That's what I like about the 1971 version:  The director stuck very close to the original material, minimizing any chance that the realistic feel would be lost.  That, and the fact that there's no music through much (if not all) of the movie.  It gives it a raw intensity that you loose, I think, when you have a musical score.  Music can kind of break the tension, and that never happens in the original movie.

Having said all that, if I hadn't read the book, I'm not sure how I'd feel about the new movie.  It would probably rank as an average sci-fi movie, in that case.  The problem I have, which I guess a lot of movies made from books suffer from, is that I know what's missing from the movie.  And knowing what's missing from the movie probably made me more attuned to plot holes created by the new material.

I haven't read the book but I am a big fan of the original 1971 film version, it is a proper science fiction film.  Its almost unique because it depicts scientists actually being scientists instead of just depicting scientists as action adventurer heroes with PHD's.  It has a sense of claustrophobia and realism to it that is quite chilling and intense, Robert Wise is also one of my favourite directors of all time.  He also directed what I think is probably the best ghost/horror film of all time, The haunting in 1963.

The remake has appeared on one of the digital film channels I have, I have deliberately avoided it though because I just know I will be disappointed with it. Even the involvement of Ridley and Tony Scott doesn't entice me.
